Another first appointment question

Two of my friends see the same obgyn that I do. One of them said "Just to warn you, they will do a vaginal ultrasound"she said that it was a horrible experience. the other friend said that if my husband goes he will be grossed out? From what I read the ultrasound doesn't feel much different from a pap, and I'm wondering why my husband will be so grossed out. Did any of you have experiences that made you feel this way?

I've had the dildo cam and it wasn't bad.  At times it can be a little uncomfortable but nothing to worry about.

  • Why would he be grossed out?  If he doesn't want to look at what's going on down there, he can stand up by your head (which is probably where the doc will have him stand anyway).

  • I have had a vaginal ultrasound, I didn't think that it was that big of a deal.  If your DH is squeamish then he might get grossed out, but he would have to be really easily grossed out.

I don't think it was similar to a pap, I would suggest peeing before hand.

  • totally fine nothing to worry about...if your dh cant handle that then you might be in for a world of trouble :)
  • I've had vaginal u/s before because of cysts, and yes, it's a little uncomfortable but it's not horrible. And DH doesn't have to stand down at your crotch and watch it go in-there's no reason he should get grossed out.
  • what? that is ridiculous. It wasn't horrible at all! And it is nothing like a pap! the doctor has this wand and puts a condom on it with lube and just slides it inside of you. I didn't even notice he was putting it inside of me until it was already there. you will be so mesmerized by seeing your little baby on the screen that you won't even care that there is something in your vag.
  • He's been near your vagina before, yes?

    Should pose no problem.

  • As someone who has had many, many transvag's due to some prior issues, I don't see what the big deal is.  Most of the time, the u/s tech doesn't even have to look down there to put it in.  And the wand is skinny enough where you can't even feel it.  Then again, so many drs and nurses have been down there in the past 10 years I've lost all sense of humility.

Your DH will probably be too fixated on the screen to even notice where the wand is going.  At least mine was.

    Exactly my thoughts.

  • It doesn't hurt... honestly I think the pap is a lot more uncomfortable. They did a vaginal for my first u/s... DH wasn't grossed out by it at all, why would he be? Nothing about the experience was awful or to be grossed out by- and whatever does make you cringe about it is all washed away as soon as you start paying attention to what's coming up on the screen!!

  • Actually I thought the vaginal ultrasound was way easier than a pap.  You can barely feel it and it doesn't go in very far at all.  I have had it done twice and it is really easy and simple.  My husband has been there both times and wasn't grossed out at all.  After all your husband's eyes will probably be locked on the video screen to see your baby.
