Spin and step classes?

Hi ladies, I am just wanting some advice. I love exercise and especially love my spin and step classes. I am just wondering if it would be OK to continue these? I get hot very easily and red in the face and  am not sure of overheating would be a good thing for the baby. I could tone down the level if needed but would like some reassurance that this is OK.

Has any one continued these classes and been fine? The ladies at the gym where I go haven't been able to give me a straight answer.

Re: Spin and step classes?

  • I think check with your doctor to get the best advice for you personally.

My doctor says most exercise if good, but I can't handle anything that involves a lot of up and down movement because I get dizzy and have to throw up, so both of those are out for me.

  • I *think* that you are supposed to keep your HR under a certain level while working out when pg but, I'm not sure exactly what that is. My sister did spinning classes while she was pg until her 8th month but, wore a HR monitor to make sure she didn't go over that line.

  • My OB said I can continue to do everything I did before (in terms of working out) except nothing over 25lbs is to be lifted, and if I get tired, rest!

  • Oh a heart rate monitor is a great idea thanks. My doctor was very vague and just said to continue my exercising at a lower pace.

  • i've read that of any exercise spin is something to be especially cautious of since your hr goes so high in a short amt of time and you get very hot. but you should (obviously) discuss w/ your dr the exact levels of your workout if you have specific ?s and at a minimum, just take it down a notch
  • I did Spin until about 1 month before delivering with my DD.  The only reason I stopped is because my stomach finally got in the way and it became uncomfortable on the bike.

I'm now doing it this time around again and I just make sure not to over exert myself.

  • My doctor said that I could do any exercise I did pre-pregnancy but to take more frequent breaks for water and be careful of overheating like pp mentioned. Ive also heard that the heartbeat thing is not necessarily the best indication because each person's fitness level is different so you can handle different levels of exersion. I just use the rule of thumb that you should be able to carry on a conversation while working out. I increase or decrease intensity based on how Im feeling.

  • My Dr. said I could continue spin as long as I keep my heart rate at 150 or below, so I bought a heart monitor, too bad I haven't actually SEEN the gym in weeks :(

I had the same question when i talked to my doctor earlier this week.  He asked for me to wait off on anything other than a fast paced walk until my 8 week appt.  He said generally there are no conerns but he wanted to make sure before he gave me the go ahead.  Its killing me not to work out like I use to but worth the wait!
