s/o BCBS insurance...

DH and I are of course switching to the family health plan once Gabriel gets here. My question is, what do we need to do about dental? Our HR person said we have to get it as soon as he is born, but he won't even go to the dentist until he's what...4 or 5?? She says the wrong thing A LOT, so I wanted to see what you guys have heard on this.

Re: s/o BCBS insurance...

  • My dentist said they'd start coming when they had 20 teeth OR 2/3 years old.  I know someone who's 2 yr old has had some dental work already.

  • My almost 4 year old niece has been going to the dentist since she was 2 and a half.

On the same lines those of you that have kids already does your pedi tell you to brush your child's gums?

  • I don't have a clue when kids start going to the dentist, but I also suggest comparing the cost of cleanings/x-rays/fillings, etc to the cost of the insurance premium.  I opted out of our dental this year because it's cheaper for us to pay out of pocket.

  • It's not unheard of with dental plans.  Maybe you can ask someone else in HR just to make sure.

When I actually worked at BCBS, they didn't have an open enrollment for dental every year like they did for health insurance.  So marriage or the birth of a child were the only times you could add a dependent.  Otherwise, you had to wait for an open enrollment and there was no schedule so you really had no idea when it would be.  There premiums were pretty minimal so I went ahead and added DH when we got married, just in case.

  • Ususally BCBS doesn't have open enrollment. If someone is hired in they can pick it up but to change it you have to get married/have a baby/death ect. I am in HR and I would call the BCBS rep for your company. If the HR rep doesn't tell you what you think is right. You should be able to add a child at a later date it would just be at the open enrollment time.
