is there a certain amount of weight you would like to gain (in a perfect world)? My Dr asked me my goal at my last appt and it got me thinking.
My goal is 20-25 lbs if I can do it, but I would never go on a diet if my weight gain went above that. I am just trying to eat healthy and am hoping for the best.
I was just wondering what everyone else thinks.
Re: I know weight is a touchy subject but...
I was a very healthy weight before getting PG, and (somewhat naively) thought I wanted to gain around 25 lbs.?
I am now up 15, and still have 17 weeks to go. Definitely gonna miss that mark, but my dr is not concerned in the least about my progress, so I'm just going by what she says. ?

I dont have a set number in my head, but would like to stay in the recommended 25-35 lbs. However, I have yet to meet someone IRL who has stayed in that low of a range.
i don't really have a goal, but i am trying to keep it reasonable.
did you doctor agree with your goal. my doctor hasn't said anything about weight.
My goal is the same (about 20-25 pounds). My midwife and I talked about the same question and we both acknowledged that a goal is an ideal if everything goes well and it may or may not actually be attainable.
I'm just trying to do the same thing as you. I'm eating a variety of healthy foods and am not focused on what's going on with the scale. So far it's not going too badly.
I would like to gain only 20, but since I'm more than halfway to that, and less than halfway in pregnancy, I don't see that happening.
I find it a strange question for a doctor to ask. Not bad, just different.
I was very concerned about my 11 pound gain by my 10 week appt. My midwife assured me it is OK, given that I had to eat certain things that made me feel better, like plain bagels, crackers, and other white carbs. Of course she doesn't want me to gain like that consistently, she thinks it will even out. I certainly hope it does! I am also super sensitive about it because I lost 35 pounds just before getting pregnant and I just want to have a healthy pregnancy, regardless of my weight gain.
EDIT - Before getting pregnant, I was still slightly overweight, which is how I based my 20 lb number.
She said it's a very healthy goal and said if I eat healthy it is very possible to do it. I think she asks so she will know if someone is only trying to gain 10 pounds or something.
My mom only gained 18 with me and 20 with my brother so I know my goal is realistic. Like I said though, I will eat until I am full and would never cut back so I would stay in my goal range.
In a perfect world I would gain the recommended amount. In my case my weight has always been heavier than what the charts recommend. According to the doctor's charts, my pre-pg weight and height considered me to be overweight.....YET - my personal trainer measured me at 160 pounds with a body/fat ratio of 12% (very lean). So. I continue to choose smart food to eat and if I gain more than 20-35 pounds then it's out of my hands and I am working on not getting down about it.

that sounds reasonable. i was just curious, because like i said, my doctor hasn't said anything. this pregnancy stuff is hard.
I think that's fair enough. There are certain numbers on the scale I don't want to see.
My goal is no so much an amount, but not to surpass 170 lbs which is what I was at w/ DD (so I guess gain no more then 45 lbs.. ok, now that I'm thinking about it and see that number, I'll aim for gaining around 30!). I gained 37 with DD and it was impossible to slow that down at the end! This time I've already gained more at this point then I had w/ DD but I also started out 10 lbs lighter..
ETA: just a thought to keep in mind.. all the extra fluids and baby, etc.. can weigh a lot. I left the hospital 20 lbs lighter, 2 days after having DD. Of course it's different for everyone, but gaining 35 lbs can mean you're only really gaining around 15.. and this kind of puts it into perspective when you're aiming for only 20-25 lbs (not talking about those who are overweight/underweight and have different requirements of course).
