NO idea Horizon milk was not that great

from my post below...  I googled Horizon, and found a few sites about their organic milk being not so organic, and I honestly had no idea!!! For those who are adamant about using organic whole milk, which brand do you use and were you aware of the Horizon stuff?

mmm.. I guess I should rephrase.. I don't mean it's 'not that great' (hell, DS is about to get a bottle of it when he wakes up!).. maybe I meant more that I had no idea there were petitions and whatnot against it.

  • I use Stoneyfield because it's local.
  • I use either Organic Valley (click here to print coupons from their site) or Nature's Promise, which is my grocery store's organic line.
  • Organic Valley! I work for a bulk milk hauling company though, so I may be biased ;)

    thanks for the coupon linkage!
  • I feel pretty strongly about buying local dairy. I use Smith Brothers milk, which is a local dairy that actually delivers (yes, we get eggs, milk, butter, and some cheese delivered!). When I run out or something, I buy Organic Valley milk at my local grocery store... there are issues with Horizon AND Safeway's O Organics brand not really being organic, so I shy away from both (which leaves OV as my only option in the store).

  • So how do we know these other brands aren't guilty of the same things people are saying about Horizon?  I'm going to have to see what my options are at my grocery store and look them up I guess.

  • Stoneyfield and The Organic Cow both new england companies..

Well, actually Stoneyfield is actually owned by Dannon now, which is a French Multinational and some of the milk *might* not be so local anymore but it still tastes good.

The Organic Cow is a vermont company that is really nice...

  • The best plan for buying organic is to get the most local you are willing to spend money on - I try to get eggs, cheese and milk from local places (and it helps that farmer's markets are starting up around here again), but if I can't, then I get Orgainc Valley, as they're a co-op. The problem with Horizon is that it's still factory farming, they just give their cows organic feed.

This is a really good link, you can look up brands and see how organic they really are:

also, the books "Real Food" by Nina Planck, and "Omnivore's Dillema" by Michael Pollan are really good about food as politics...

  • We're lucky, our store brand makes a ton of USDA certified organic products.  They are priced very resonably and on sale all of the time.  Sometimes there are empty holes in the milk case where the organic whole milk would be, because the price was so good.
