Washington Babies

nwa

we ususally fly alaska...  and we love it...  but we are flying into rinky dink qaud cities iowa tomorrow and are on northworst...

I called to tell them we are flying with 9 mo old twins... they were great about seating!  we have our own row!  BUT they charge for car seat checked with luggage....  really???  but not gate checked...  I know tony wants to luggage check the car seats...  but I am all for saving the 100 bucks...

so if I have the diaper bag on the stroller handles, one other bag I carry...  tony has the camera bag and the carseat bags are on wheelies...  I dont think thats terrible?   i would rather not lug the carseats, but this also ensures they are with us and not lost, which I am worried about...

thoughts ladies...   we also have a gd 45 minute connection in minneapolis we are destined to miss... and then the next flight is 2 hrs later...  we are betting on missing this....

Re: nwa

  • I hate Northwest airlines!  I hope you have better luck with them than I have had in the past.

I agree, check them at the gate.  We took a bunch of stuff on the plane with us when we went to see my sister last month.  We only checked two bags since we had to pay for them.  We did have to check one bag at the gate both ways, but it was really no big deal.

Good luck on your trip to Iowa.

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.

  • I am all for saving money but that is a lot to lug around and thru security with the 2 babies. I guess for me it may be worth it to check them just to not have to deal with them in the security line and at the gate. But like you said if you gate check them they are with you and have a better chance of not being lost.

It really depends on how your feeling and if you feel like you can really juggle all that stuff and the kids too.

  • annette -- my guess is we'll luggage check them... it IS lot to lug...  I just worry that if we miss our connection (likely) we'll lose our carseats...

  • if you miss your connection, your car seats will just beat you to iowa and be waiting when you get there.

I would worry more about missing your connection because of lugging all of that stuff and having to wait for your gate checked stuff in between flights.

I think you can make a 45 minute connection. You can do it!!

  • I don't fly often, I'm not a big help, but when it comes to the possibility of losing something - I'm all for carrying all that my arms can take... I would be really upset if my carseat(s) got lost because I missed a flight, so I totally understand your concern. I think if it was direct it'd be a different story. Like I said, I don't fly often and I haven't flown with a baby, so my advice is purely unfounded :-)

They're big convertible ones???? then definitely check them.   They're impossible to carry in the airport.

There is a cool thing you can buy taht makes it so you can carry the car seat on your back like a back pack.  But it's $70 I think.  You can also buy a luggage cart type thing so you can roll your car seat with your kid in it even.  Again, I think that's nearly $100.  But if in the future you want to bring the car seats, get one of those items so you can carry them.

For checking them, make sure to get a car seat bag for them.  Target has them for about $20.  I'm always able to smash a lot more stuff than just the car seat in the bag too.  I put Ben's toys and stuffed animals that he'll want in there.

  • I really think checking them is the way to go. Sorry :(  and 45 min is actually a "legal" connection and they have to protect you on something else if you miss it.

I can only imagine wiht 2 wiggley 9month olds 2 large carseats  1 diaper bag and then our purse and your DH's camera bag. EEK that is a lot to carry between gates.

Try being super sweet to the check in person if you can and plead with them to waive the fee for the car seats. It might work.

  • yeah Jill...  they've been in the evenflo triumphs since they were about 5 months old...  Gabe outgrew the bucket seat...

I am definitely sucking up the fees to not deal with it.  and thanks Jill for the tips on shoving more in the carseat bags...  I picked those up last week...  and I am definitely wearing sneakers!  NOT *cute*shoes!

  • Yeah I figure if it counts as a bag, I'm using it as more luggage and putting stuff in there.  Oh, I also stuff a package of diapers and a package of wipes in tehre too so I don't have to buy them as soon as I arrive!

Wear sweatpants, sneakers, ponytail.. no point looking cute!  :)  You've got work to do.  Make sure you eat too.... you need the stamina.  Have fun!
