Maternity Dress out of Plus size clothing?

I will be about 33 weeks when I am in a friends wedding this fall, and I havent told her I'm pregnant yet.

Does anyone know anything about having a plus size dress altered to fit as a maternity dress? The fabric for the designer is $30/yd, so the dress would be so expensive to have made, and I'm hoping this idea of altering a plus size dress would work.

Thanks!

Re: Maternity Dress out of Plus size clothing?

  • My friend's sister was 8 months pregnant for her wedding last year.  She bought some extra fabric and had extra panels added to the sides of the dress and you couldn't tell that she had it altered at all.

you might not need a plussized one to alter down depending on how big you are you might just get a few sizes bigger and have that altered down

  • I am not convinced altering a plus sized dress will be your best approach.  Keep in mind that a plus sized dress will be plus sized all over - across the back, the arms etc.  This could result in extensive alterations with the dress being needing to be basically taken apart to make the top fit you.

Talk to the woman at the store where the dress is being purchased.  They have lots of experience in what will be the best approach with the dress that was chosen.

It really depends on the style of the dress.  Is it fitted?  Empire waist?  It could be that you will order up a couple sizes to fit your larger chest and then order material to add panels for your belly.   Or, just a few sizes up will be fine if it is a forgiving style.

The store may also encourage the bride to have you select your dress from the designer's maternity line depending on the cut and the material,  There are some regular styles that just don't work well on very pregnant women.

Talk to your friend as soon as you are comfortable and let her know.  She may be very open to just having you wear a maternity dress.

  • I'd let your friend know as soon as you can so the semstress making the dresses can plan accordingly.

I'll be 30 weeks at my BIL's wedding in June.  I ordered this bridesmaid dress from David's Bridal.  Pre-pg I was a size 6 and I ordered a 16.  I'm not having my fitting done until the end of this month (much later than the other bridesmaids).

Don't forget that not only will your bump grow, probably so will your boobs - chest and cup size - and hips, ect.  You will probably need a little extra length in the dress to accommodate your bump as well.  And you may also need a bigger shoe size than you wear right now.

    Good luck and congratulations!  :)

  • Thanks so much for all of the input! I'm glad it looks like I DON'T need to get the dress made from scratch!

  • I just bought a bridesmaids dress for a wedding in August and I wear a 14, which is a 16 in bridesmaid dress land, so I ordered a 20 to give me extra room all over, and then I'll get it altered down to fit me then. I also got extra length, to prevent it from being shorter in the front than the back due to the bump. We got to pick our own though, and the dress is pretty flowy.

I think you should consider telling your friend. Maybe the line of dresses she picked has a maternity dress you can wear, or maybe she will let you wear one that is different so you will be more comfortable and you can pick one that will need less alteration.?

  • A friend of my cousin's was 8 months pregnant for my cousins wedding -- the rest of the wedding party (including myself) are super short, so when we got our dresses fitted, we saved all the extra fabric (and the shawls we weren't using) for her.  She had a seamstress add in extra panels to make it fit her.  It was perfect -- definitely give it a shot if you can.
  • My SIL was 7 mos. in her sister's wedding.  She had a plus size dress altered to fit her belly and it looked great!
