Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Who has made the plunge and turned....

...the carseat around to forward facing?  How old was your LO and what made you decide it was time?

I'm well aware of the risks of forward vs. backward....I'm just curious who has gone ahead and done it, when, and what made them decide it was time.  TIA-   : )

  • I'm curious as well. We won't be turning DS for awhile. (Mostly because he's a pretty little guy.)

  • We haven't but my nephew is foward facing at 20 months because they bought a new car and the seat does not fit very well rear facing. I still plan on keeping him as long as I can.

  • We haven't yet b/c he's perfectly content. But if he starts hating the car like he did with his infant seat, we would turn him. I couldn't deal with that blood curdling screaming again- we moved him to his convertible at 4 months b/c of it!

I turned DS around at 1 year.  He was miserable rear facing.  He also has a larger head, so when he would fall asleep his head would fall forward.  My pedi said it was fine.
  • We did it the day DS turned one.  Much to my dismay, we had to.  Our DS is off the charts tall, and we could no longer fit him in the car seat rear facing.  Our pedi said it was fine.  Please no flames--we really had no other choice!

  • We turned DS around on our last big car trip.  I had hoped to keep him RF longer, but there are only so many straight hours of screaming that I can take without veering into uncoming traffic.  He cries a lot less FF.

We turned my DD around at a year, she was 20 pounds and HATED rear facing.  After discussing with my pedi, she agreed with having us turn her around as the screaming and yelling was very distracting for the driver which became a driving risk due to the distraction.  DD had bad reflux and screamed in the infant seat due to the angle so we had to take her out of that at 5 months and the rear facing angle was also not great for her.  She loves being in the car now and never screams.  We turned my older DD around at 18 months and that was back before they changed the recommendation but she was tiny and I felt better having her RF longer.  No flames please as everyone is able to make a choice on their own without being flamed for it!

  • We haven't turned her around yet, but I have been debating about it lately. It is getting hard lately to put her in RF without getting kicked constantly, and DD is a big girl. But everytime I think maybe I will turn her I get the thought in my head that if we were in an accident & she got hurt I would never be able to forgive myself. I guess I can deal with being kicked for a little while longer. But we will definitely turn her around when the new baby comes (she'll be 20 months) b/c it will be too tight with 2 RF seats.

  • We turned him right after his birthday for a number of reasons.  1) he is all legs and was scrunched up 2) He fell asleep within 5 min of being put in the car. This really screwed with naps and daycare really was having issues with nap time there.  He was only getting 30 min of naps total because he would wake when we got somewhere and at home refused to nap.  3) I physically could not get him anymore.  I have major back issues.  4) we drive a lot.  He has not screamed once since we did it.

  • Well, DS isn't even 20lbs yet, but even if he were, we have no plans of turning him until at least 2 y/o.?

  • We turned DD around at 1 year.  She is a big girl 32" 27 lbs at her appointment and it was getting too uncomfortable for her, she hated RF...Pedi said it was fine to turn her around.

  • Oh, and we will definitely be turning him at 19months when the baby arrives b/c there won't be enough room for 2 RF seats in my DHs car.
  • DD is still Rear facing, but i am considering turning her around soon. She is 30" and 26lbs, so she's big enough,  but i know it is safer backward. It is getting so hot in FL now and the A/C doesn't reach her as well Rear facing. I am torn!
  • We're going to wait until 2, at least. I figure if it's safer, and he doesn't mind why not? He doesn't know the difference, and has always loved being in the car. And he's a little guy so he has tons of room before he'll feel cramped.

DS #1 is 17 months and is still RF but I'm afraid I may have to turn him soon. ?He has started to turn around in his carseat to try to see us and when he can't he is sometimes getting one or both of his arms out of the straps. ?I have no clue how he's doing it because they are tight. ?If I can't get him to stop doing it then I think I'll have to turn him.
  • We're still RF but I think I'll end up turning him when we go to the beach this year...he'll be 18 months at the time. He'll probably stay RF in the nanny's car even then though because her carseat is installed that way now and there's no reason to change it for the short trips they take.

  • Joseph is FF. Has been for a few months now. We got a new car, and because we are both very tall, with the seats back all the way, the car seat didn't fit RF.
  • We turned her after her 1st b-day.  Even though she doesn?t weight a lot, she?s tall and her feet were touching the back seat and I didn?t like that.  She also hated being in the RF car seat.  Now that she?s in the FF one she loves being in the car and I can finally after more than a year sit in the front with my DH or drive on my own without being a nervous wreck because she?s going nuts.

  • i turned him at one year (22.9lbs and 31")

my husband is 6'8 and he cant fit in our suv with him rear facing.  i couldve put him rf behind my seat but i figured he was safer ff in the center seat

  • One year, baby! And car rides have been a slice of heaven ever since!
  • We are just going to turn DS FF this weekend and only because we have to since he reached the height limit for rear facing. My plan was to keep him rear facing until 18 months (as long as he didn't exceed the limits), but he had a growth spurt recently and grew 3 inches over the past few months.

My recommendation would be to keep your LO rear facing as long as she is within the height/weight limit for rear facing..
