Summer Infant video monitor ?

I think we're going to buy this but don't necessarily want to shell out for an extra video camera.  (It's already expensive enough as it is!)

If you own this, do you think we could position it to get a shot into both cribs?  We're going to position them next to each other with a gap big enough just for us to walk between them. Do you think there'd be a problem with range if we had to scoot the camera back to get both cribs in one screen?  Thoughts?  Suggestions?

in order to get a full crib shot, we had to mount the camera around 7" high. now, i guess if we had it at a more shallow angle, it miiiiiight work to get two in there, but honestly, i'm not sure.

do you already have the two cribs set up? if so, you are welcome to borrow ours one night and play around to see if it would work.

Oooh, thank you!  That would be awesome!   It would be great to try it out before buying.  I'll email you!

  • We had trouble getting both cribs in one shot. Never worked for them, but their cribs were set up end-to-end along one wall in the?beginning, which may be why.

But, are you planning on putting the boys in their own cribs right away? The girls napped in the same crib until 4ish months when they started moving around too much to be together. We found they slept much better that way, and it worked out well for the video monitor. By the time they were in individual beds, they were sleeping pretty well through the night and the parents didn't feel like they needed to SEE both full cribs, the audio function was enough to put them at ease, and they could peek in on one.

Eventually they had to put the cribs on different walls because the girls would play through the slats, pass their blankies back and forth, etc and not sleep.. at that point they bought a second set and mounted cameras above each crib. One was set to Chan A and one to B and they could use one handheld monitor and just flip between the two channels to see both girls. ?

  • Two thumbs up!  We bought two of them because each monitor thingie has 2 um, whatchamacallits.  You can go to view A and view B.  When we have Cooper in one bassinet and Spencer in the other, we set up each camera on each bassinet and then both Jay and I get a monitor and we can switch between views/cameras to see both boys.  And when they're in the same bassinet, we just use one camera obviously and it works great.

    :)

They'll sleep together in one crib until it becomes difficult so the monitor thing won't be a problem for a while.  I'd just like to know if it'll work at all for both cribs.

  • hmm, maybe I should learn to read full complete paragraphs before commenting.

We had one and it worked well when both boys were in the same bassinet but we tried using just the one camera when they were in different ones at night (for the flailing, before the swaddling) and you could see one guy perfect and the other was just too far.  It's great for close-up, but I'd recommend getting two when they're in separate cribs because it's not going to be good quality picture (and you'll want that b/c you can totally see when one spits up or something) viewing from so far away.

If that makes sense at all.  I don't seem to be making much sense today...

  • i think you could make it work if you put it at the top of the wall opposite of the cribs.
  • ditto pps on angles.

My husband ended up finding them the monitor for $95--I will email him and find out where he got it. and post.

  • I would keep an eye out on craigslist. A lady posted a monitor with extra camera for $80 last week. Someone barely beat me to it. :( I ended up buying one monitor at the AMOM sale for $45 last week and we will buy an extra camera on down the line when they go into their own cribs. I'm going to watch craigslist still for someone to post a monitor with an extra camera and see if I can talk them into just selling me their extra camera separately. ;)

  • I know this isn't the question you asked, but if you do need to buy another piece, try Ebay.  The monitor was one of the big things we had to buy after our showers and we found the same one we registered for at BRU for 179 on Ebay for $109 with shipping.  We bought it on Friday and it arrived on Monday!  Just an idea in case you need it!
  • The Summer video monitors are on sale at Target for 145. Reg. price is 179.

  • You can also buy the separate pieces on their website. If you want to get to cameras and use one monitor for example. I am thinking about doing this for #2. I can't remember the prices though.
  • We bought a security camera from Fry's and set it up on DD's crib. Much cheaper than those baby ones. Email me if you want details on it.
