NBR: Anyone ever had an allergy to make-up?

Thank you so much for anyone that can help me.  My sister got married Saturday and we all had our make-up professionally done.  I normally dont wear a lot, but the lady seemed good, she cleaned her brushes before and all.  Monday morning I woke up and it looked like someone had punched me in the eye.  My eyeball was fine, but bright red and puffy underneath (wear I assumed she put concealer).  My left eye is a little red, but my right eye is even worse today.  I cannot think of what else could have caused this.  I want to avoid the doc if this is something that will go away in the next day or 2 (by not using any products on that area of my face), but am concerned obviously and am wondering if this sounds like an allergy or possibly something more.  Thanks again!!

  • I can't use alot of the expensive make ups because I will break out in a rash kind of thing on my face.  Its bad.  My mom will also have reactions but only to the eye make up

  • as much as I love how it goes on and make my eyelashes look I cannot wear the Maybelline Full and Soft mascara. My eyelids swell up from it.

  • Hmmm... I would think if it were an allergy, both eyes would look similar being that the makeup was applied to both?  I had an allergic reaction to Mary Kay once - my cheeks broke out in a rash.  It went away on its own.

  • I did once to lipstick, it was that color last stuff. My lip blew up to twice it's size!!!

My neighbor and SIL are allergic to all kinds of make-up but they get red welts.

I'd be careful if you think it could be an insect bite though, those things can get pretty crazy.

  • I do have some reaction to certain colors, like pinks, purples - my eyes will swell or water if I wear certain products on my eyes.  However, it usually comes on pretty fast... like within hours, so the fact that it was only one eye and it took 36-48 hours makes me think it's not a reaction to the makeup... try taking a Benedryl and see if that helps...
  • I've had a reaction to MAC make-up before.  I looked like I was punched in the face.  I think it may have been the metals in the eyeshadow.  It was for grad and the eye-shadow was a bronze shade... just a guess.  I've been able to wear other MAC eye-shadows since.

I would just splash water on to wash and pat dry and not use anything on it... play it by ear- if it's the same or worse tomorrow, I'd probably bite the bullet though.

  • My eyelids were swollen after Mary Kay eye shadow--after they changed theirformulas to be more hypoallergenic.  You can be allergic to anything...I looked like I had been beat up.
