Success after IF

put formula/breastmilk back in fridge after warming?

I'm at work and can't remember the instructions. I want to make sure DH is doing it right.

If baby doesn't finish or didn't want the bottle after we warmed it..can we put it back in the fridge. Something tells me we can't with formula but how about BM???

  • I don't reheat formula, but I think you can do that w/BM.

but doesn't talk about heating and then re-storing...

  • If the baby has drank from the bottle then you only have an hour to use it (formula). I warm it then put it back all the time, like when she falls asleep (before she drinks out of it).

  • Here's info from kellymom.  www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/reusing-expressedmilk.html  I'm surprised, I would have said no.
  • It's fine to re-refrigerate and offer breastmilk one more time - it has natural anti-bacterial properties that make this OK (but if it's not finished at that second feeding you need to toss what's left.)  Formula - you have to toss whatever is left after one feeding.

  • One more thing - if you've mixed formula and bm - you have to toss.  That's why it's better to feed them separately if you supplement (bm in one bottle, formula in another) - that way you don't waste bm.  I do this at night - I warm up a 6 oz bottle of bm - and a 3 or 4 ounce bottle of formula.  When he finishes the bm bottle - I pop the formula bottle in his mouth (if he wants more food) without missing a beat.  But if he were to not finish the bm bottle - I could save what's left and give it to him at the next feeding.

  • To each their own, but I mixed, heated (in the microwave! gasp!) , chilled and reheated. She lived.  Of course I never really made it that warm, just 15 secs to take the chill off, but I was NOT wasting that liquid gold.

I read the enzymes from the spit will start to break things down, but I think that might have been a nest myth or something?? I dunno. But that's what I did.
