2nd Trimester

When did your corpus luteum disappear?

Hi ladies,

I am 13 weeks and have a large (7cm) corpus luteum on the same ovary that released the egg. Since it is (thankfully) not growing, the doctor is not recommending to do anything and hopes it will go away on its own. I am wondering if others in similar situations can share their stories. From all that I read corpus luteum is supposed to dissapear at the end of your 1st trimester as the placenta takes over making progesterone. However, just had my appointment yesterday and the cyst is still there. Also, my doctor told me to stay away from all physical activity (including sex)...which has been very frustrating. Anyone in the same boat?? Did anyone have a cyst all through their pregnancy??

Re: When did your corpus luteum disappear?

  • Mine was visible at the 9 wk and 13 wk ultrasounds, and was gone by the 18 wk ultrasound.

I had light spotting for a few weeks in 1st tri, so I was on pelvic rest then (not that I wanted to do anything, I was sick as a dog!!) but I was never given any restrictions because of the CL cyst. ?

  • I have a 5cm corpus luteum as well.  I am a little over 14 weeks and I am actually going for a follow up u/s on Thursday to see if it has changed in the past 3 weeks from my last u/s.  I have been put on pelvic rest as well, but for other issues not associated with the cyst, and it sucks!  My cyst use to be quite painful and the past week or two I haven't noticed it as much, so I am hoping that it is a sign that it has shrunk!

  • Mine shrunk to half the size but still hasn't disappeared.

  • just a question...

how do you know which ovary released the egg that got fertilized???

  • The doctor told me that the cyst formed over the same ovary that released the egg...something to do with hormones
