NBR: Ambien....Not so sure

So DH and I went over to the ENT yesterday for a follow up with his CPAP machine.

Doc was asking DH all sorts of questions. DH said that he sometimes has a hard time falling asleep with the mask on bc he isnt used to it. Then he says if he wakes up he sometimes has a hard time falling asleep bc he is getting used to it again etc. Well the doc just said.....lets just try some Ambien.

I am not so sure about this. That drug has ugly side effects and the ENT said it wasnt habit forming which I know it is. We havent filled it yet and DH wants to wait for a weekend but I dont know if I even want him to take it at all. He isnt having trouble sleeping just getting comgy to sleep he doesnt need a sedative to do that, you know?

IDK, Im just not 100% comfy with it. It just seemed like the doc was drug happy yesterday. He even gave DH a steroid shot for his allergies.....good lord! He said some of the effects of that would be trouble sleeping!!!! Go figure!

Re: NBR: Ambien....Not so sure

  • Yeah, I'm not so sure I'd take it either.  I know M's mom takes it, and she's a zombie after taking it.  The house could burn down around her.  And she feels like she needs it and can't sleep without it, and I think it's just because she's formed the habit.  IDK, but I know when Eli spends the night there, she does not take it because she's afriad she couldn't take care of him in the middle of the night if she needed to.

What about something like Tylenol PM?  Or does he even feel like he needs something at all?  Or maybe he should just drink a beer!  Beer

See the doc said he wouldnt feel like that but I think diff. I dont think T thinks he needs anything at all, just the doc suggested it. He does have a beer or 2. IDK I just dont think drugs are the answer exp that one. The RX is only for 3 weks but to me that is enough to get him hooked or cause problems. I dont know how a sleep aid is going to get him used to the mask YK?

  • Because it will make him dead to the world.  I wouldn't take it, personally.  I'm not a drug happy person either, but it sounds like this doc is.  And I'm sure most of his patients are more than willing to take it.  GL.  I know it sucks for him, but hopefully the longer he wears it the more used to it he'll get.  I know things are better than what they were, so that's good.

  • My mom took it the week before my wedding because she knew she would be so stressed out. She asked her Dr her to write the Rx for 5 pills. After 5 nights of taking it (and getting great sleep) she said that she knows how people could become addicted to it. I would just be very careful!
  • Im going to talk to him again and see if it is something he thinks he really needs. I would almost rather buy him the Simply Sleep stuff and not get an RX.

He hasnt even mentioned sleeping pills so I know it is not something that is on his mind. As for the mask the doc did say that it isnt a perm thing, he wants DH to use it long enough to help drop some of his weight and then the apnea and snoring should go away on its own. T is putting in the effort, now we just need to the results to start showing.

  • DH takes Ambien when we work nights (he can't sleep during the day worth a crap). . .which is only a few nights a month. It can be addictive if he takes it every day. If Benadryl or Tylenol PM aren't helping, he could ask for trazadone. It used to be used as an antidepressant, but is now used for sleep. It's an older drug (not as expensive) and not addictive. ?Is your hubby just having trouble sleeping because of the CPAP? Lots of people have trouble tolerating the mask. GL!

  • In case you don't recognize me, I'm a regular NC Nestie lurker and occasional poster.  I strongly advise against taking Ambien.  It didn't work all that well for my DH in terms of helping him sleep, and it did make him sleep drive.  Yes, sleep drive.  That's one of the not-so-uncommon side effects mentioned in the commercials and drug literature.  He crashed his truck going about 60 mph out in a rural part of the county.  He somehow got himself home (truck was totaled) in the middle of the night and didn't realize what had happened until the sheriff showed up at our door the next morning to cite him for leaving the scene of an accident.  Ambien is bad news!

  • Ambien is habit forming, as is Lunesta.

If they insist on Rx ask about Remeron and Trazadone.

You can also try Melatonin OTC.

  • Although alcohol makes you feel drowsy, it can actually make your sleep quality poorer.  He could try cutting out alcohol in the evenings for a little while and see if that helps. I don't have any advice as far as the Ambien; I know a couple people who take it and haven't had any problems, but I don't have personal experience with it. My DH occasionally takes melatonin (it's OTC) and that seems to help.
