2nd Trimester

anyone BF'ing but not taking a BF'ing class?

DH just got laid off from his job yesterday and since i did not BF DS # 1 i was thinking about giving it a try w/ DS # 2, however now w/ DH being laid off i'm trying to save money wherever i can so i was wondering if any of you are planning on BF'ing but not taking a class.

and maybe if there's any 2nd time mom's out there who BF but didn't take a class you could lend your advice?

thanks!

  • I was not planning to take a class... I'm hoping the hospital's lactation consultant can help, and there's always La Leche League too.

I'm not. My hospital has a lactation specialist that visits you in your room plus one of my good friends is a lactation specialist. I plan to get all the advice I need from them, plus I'll be reading up on it.

    I didn't take a class--but I DID educate myself.  Get a book or check out www.kellymom.com.

I'm not planning on a class.  Like you I don't have the money to spend.  My hospital has a lactation consultant so I'll bleed them for info.

This. Plus, if your DH got laid off, you'll qualify for WIC, and they give free BF classes and have free lactation consultants on staff. You should make an appt! Sorry for what you're going through! Hopefully he finds another job soon! GL!
  • I BF DS for the first 3 months and never took a class  - I just had a lot of patience in the beginning and after a few days we did really well with it.

Just get advice from other moms who have done it and do some reading online.

Its the kind of thing that on the job training is way more helpful than a ton of classes.  The lactation consultant in our hospital barely spent anytime with me - I didn't have many problems though so i am sure if I needed more help she would have spent more time with me.

Just ask for the help from the LC if you need it.

  • I am not planning on taking a class, but my mom was the president of her local La Leche League for years and years so I am hoping for phone support from her. :)?

i completely forgot there's a lactation consultant at the hospital so if need be i guess i can always ask them for help.  and i have a few friends that BF so i can lean on them for advice too.

    thanks ladies.

Our local Babies R Us has free seminars, one of them is a breastfeeding class run by a lactation consultant.  It goes over some basics that helped me feel a bit more comfortable with everything prior to meeting the lactation consultant in the hospital when I had my son.  Maybe check that out?

  • I am not taking a class.  I have read a lot and plan to read more.  I will also consult with the hospital's lactation consultant after giving birth.  It seems kind of silly to me to pay to sit in a class for someone to tell me what I can read for myself and have me practice with a doll.
  • I never took a class on BF'ing!  I can't believe that there really are classes out there!  Um, make sure baby takes in as much of your areola as possible with the nipple to get a good latch.  You can hold baby in a few different positions- try a few out to see what works best for you both.  Make sure that you hear baby swallow.  If baby is gaining weight and has poopy and wet diapers then baby is eating enough.  Um, it is really all very natural.  Plus you save a SH*T ton of money!  =)  Good luck and stay relaxed about it.  You'll do fine!  =)
