Parenting after a Loss

teething pain mostly at night?

this weekend, i really thought andrew wa beginning to teeth - runny nose, drooling like a faucet, fussy, clingy, constantly sucking on his bottom lip, trying to chew my finger off, etc. well, yesterday he seemed fine at daycare and inthe evening. but last night he was up every 2-3 hours in hysterics. i tried giving him his paci (which he doesnt use that often, but if i give it to him inthe midde of the night he takes it willingly and falls right back to sleep), and he refused it - shook his head back and forth and everything.

is it possible that his gums bother him more at night than during the day? msybe because he doesn't have toys (or my finger) to chew on?

Re: teething pain mostly at night?

  • When Logan was teething, he only seemed bothered at night.  He was up a lot, sometimes the paci would work, sometimes not.  During the day he was totally fine!  I think he's starting again because he's been up more at night.  I hope Andrew feels better soon!  (And I hope you get some sleep!)

  • Yeah, I think that's typical. During the day they have distractions, and like you said, stuff to chew on. Try giving Infant Motrin, it lasts 6-8 hours so I find it works best at night and in our case always better than Tylenol for teething pain.

I agree with PP Infant Motrin
  • luke has always had more problems with teething at night. i'm assuming it's because once they settle down and are sleeping/still they can feel the pain more than when they're running around during the day. not scientific, just my justification for all those sleepless nights. :)
  • I've read that it's because they're distracted during the day.  Like in our house, the dog is running around, I'm singing and talking, we're playing with toys, etc.  But at night he's all alone in a dark quiet room and he's not distracted from the pain, you know?  We're also a big fan of the infant Motrin.
