What can I eat before the glucose test?

My dr told me not to fast, just don't eat anything too sugary.  I didn't ask any questions because I had planned to schedule my appointment first thing in the morning, and then they didn't have any appointments until 1:30.  So now I am wondering what I can actually eat because I'm paranoid about failing and having to do it again.

I ate peanut butter on whole wheat, high fiber bread with both pregnancies.  I think I would stay away from simple carbs and try to eat protein and complex carbs.  Avoid anything that can be readily broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream.

  • Yikes, that is a tough appt. time.  I did mine at like 8:30am and had an egg for breakfast.  I made the mistake of drinking coffee in the car and I failed by one point.  I guess I would try to stick to protein.  The 3 hour really sucks, so maybe call and ask your Dr's office what they recommend in your situation!
  • Well, I'm going to be in a meeting in 5 minutes until probably 11, so I won't actually be able to eat during that time.  I just drink lots of water, and hopefully my stomach doesn't start eating itself.

Then I just have to figure something out for lunch...

    Thanks, girls.

  • Could I eat a salad with ranch dressing?  That should be okay; right?
  • My coworker had hers at 3 p.m. the other day and ate pretty normally. I had lunch with her that day and she started scarfing an apple. I was like, "what are you doing?! that has sugar!!" Yeah... she failed and has to do the 3-hour now.

Stick to what the others said: whole wheat bread, peanut butter, eggs, etc. Good luck!

Hmmm, if it was me, I don't think I would eat a salad.  Some things that come on salads, like tomatoes and beets, have a high glycemic index and dressings can be high too if you aren't making them yourself.

Another idea would be lunchmeat and cheese.

  • whole wheat bread with either lunch meat and cheese or peanut butter and skip the fruit.....a salad might be ok depending on what you put on it, but dressing can be high in sugar.  You could also do something like grilled chicken breast w/ a side of veggies and a whole grain carb.  Stay away from carbs that are not whole grain.

  • Thank you all!  The hardest part is that I'm at work, and we have a cafeteria, but I can't be sure exactly what is in anything.  Even whole wheat bread...I don't know what it is really.  I'll find something small, and then probably stuff myself after the appointment! Smile
  • Just make sure you eat SOMETHING, because if you eat nothing that can throw off your glucose levels too!
