Fulltime Nanny/Babysitter....pay?

I am starting back to work next Monday and have everything all set to send DS to daycare.  At a family gathering this weekend my niece (a college student) mentions that she's broke and looking for another pt job because she is not getting any hours at her retail job.  She offers to babysit which I take her up on.  I have her coming over on Wed. for a couple of hours.  Then I got to thinking that maybe she'd want to babysit for DS over her summer break full time....she'd probably make more $ than at a pt retail job and I'd save $ too plus it would be great to have DS at home with one on one attention.   So.....my question is do you think paying $125/week is a decent amount?  It would be a 10 hour day 5 days a week for her.  At daycare I would pay $180/week but w/ taxfree money.  We briefly talked about the possibility over the phone and will talk more on Wednesday...we haven't talked $.

Also, what's the hourly rate for a babysitter these days?

  • When I babysat 10 years ago I got 40 a day.  $125 a week is a steal...to the point where I think you're taking advantage of her and should pay her more than that.

  • yeah if I were her I would probably want $200 a week. Thats a lot of hours for $125.

  • When DD was going to a babysitter, I was paying her $140/week and that was for 3 eight hour days. That was great compared to the $250 that full time daycares were running.

I think $125/week for 10 hour days, 5 days is pretty cheap..she would probably make more somewhere else.

Babysitters in my area go for $10-$12 hourly.....

  • $125 a week for 5 10 hr days ends up being $2.50 an hour.... that's just wrong.

  • Welll that's $2.50 an hour. Even if she and her DH are in the 30% tax bracket and she doesn't report, it's still equivalent to less than $4 an hour taxed. We will be paying a nanny we share with another family and their toddler $9 an hour.
  • No to flame you...but I think that is way too little.  I babysat/nannied a lot in my teenage/college years and I got $10 per hour.
  • Wow.  OK, so I'm seriously out of touch.  I'm glad I posted her before talking to her about pay.  I guess I will offer her the $180/week I would spend on daycare and see if she's interested.  If not I will send DS to the daycare center, unfortunately we're on a tight budget and I really can't afford more than that.

I really don't want to take advantage of anyone, let alone my niece so maybe it's not such a great idea after all.

I just spoke to my friend tonight about watching my DD two days a week in the summer so that I can postpone sending her to daycare until the fall and we will be paying her $50 a day...You have to remember the 1:1 attention deserves more money, plus she will be coming to your house.  I made $200 a week in college during the summers babysitting..

  • i wish! ?we just hired a nanny for the same amount of hours for $500 per week. ?nannies will always be more expensive than daycare.
  • The going rate in Seattle is $13 - $25 an hour.
  • My friend just hired a live-in nanny to take care of her twins. The lady is one of those "gray-market" domestic workers (read: probably not here legally) but comes HIGHLY recommended. She's getting $300/week - and remember that her room and board are all paid for since she's live-in. I mean, it's twins, so there's something of a premium built in, but still. $300/week.
