Happy Heiny v. Bum Genius

I am doing CD research and these two types of diapers seem to be the easiest and most convenient to use. ?Can you share your experiences with them with me - which do you prefer? ?Thanks!

I have both (use for daycare) and I prefer HH to BGs. ?The HH work better for my chunky thigh, skinny waisted DS fit-wise. ?The velcro tabs are wider than the BGs as well, which to me seems like a sturdier fit. ?I still like the BG's well enough that I have quite a bit (around 8 or so) and they are in heavy rotation. ?=) ?I haven't had issues with significant staining in either the HH or the BG. ?Also, both types have fit DS since around 5 months through now (17 months) and I have no doubt that they will fit through potty learning.

I think it just depends on the body type/shape of your baby and I don't think you can go wrong with whichever one you decide on.

I'm not a big fan of microfiber though (occasional stink issues) so I'm trying to slowly replace with natural fiber inserts.?

  • I like different things about each. I like that the BG dipes have a cover flap over the pocket part but I like the legs on the HHs (DS is getting some chunky legs and these fit best).

I also like the prints that HHs offer. DS has a few pirates dipes, a flag one and a dragon one. I've nly seen BGs in solids.

  • I have them both and both have their pros and cons- but we prefer the HHs.

Happy Heinys are a better fit for DS, and he has more room to grow in them, but the back is open and the elastic leaves a red mark on him.  Also, the microfleece inner seems pilly after even one wash... no big deal though- pilly fleece doesn't effect the function of the diaper.

BGs- not as much room to grow, not crazy about the aplix- it's really curling on us.  BUT- apart from the aplix, it seems a bit better constructed to me and the elastic across the back is covered more....  Not as good of a fit for us as the HH, but better than many other pockets :)

  • I think the HH I have is an old style and we hated it. It leaked like crazy and the waist couldn't get tight enough of DS. Now it might fit his waist better, but the legs would still leak because there isn't any stitching holding the leg elastic. It made it really easy for the inside of the diaper to roll out around the legs.

The BG are much better for us. However, DS is getting a little fuller in the thighs, so we will probably have to adjust the rise a little early to compensate for it. We still have to do the waist pretty small on him, but that makes the legs a little tight.

So, based on what PP have said, I may need to try the new HH. The one I have was purchased 2 years ago and is probably an old style, based on pics that I've seen.

  • The very best advice I can give to any family that is thinking about cloth diapering is to get a trial package from one of the vendors and try out a bunch of different diapers before committing to any one system.

The bottom line is that it doesn't matter if I like HH, BG or any other diaper.  It matters what works for you and your baby.  I'm not being snarky...I'm being honest.   Pockets and AIOs sound great...and for some families they are.  But for many others they don't work.

It breaks my heart when I see people get invested in one type of diaper and then when that doesn't work they get discouraged or frustrated.  I'd hate to see that happen here.

Good luck in whatever you decided to do.  FWIW, I hated both HH & BG.  The microsuede cloth didn't work for us and she leaked like crazy when I put her in them.  Also, the HH leg rise was too big and there was a gap for us,
