Required to make up days if schools close??

Anyone know if schools will have to make up lost days if cloosed due to flu?  I have 7 days leewayat end of my mat. leave and then would HAVE to return to teaching for remainder of year or loose remaining 2 months pay!  Now I'm nervous I'd have to leave DS and go back!

  • i am not a teacher in TX so i can't say for sure, but i would guess yes. my mom works for a school district in MA and when they have a snow day or any other reason for school to close, they have to tack it on at the end of the year. in MA the law says children must attend school for a specific number of days (180, i think) and i imagine its the same or similar here.

  • I would think they would have to be made up, especially since so many days were already lost for Ike.

  • I *think* that the state can excuse days but that would be the only way to not have to make them up.  With Ike there were some schools who had days excused so that the kids didn't have to go through the entire summer to make it up.
  • we've been told that we wouldn't depending on the number of days that we'd get shut down for. rumor has it that the same applies in this situation as when weather causes a declaration of a federal emergency/disaster and that they wouldn't be made up because of the alert level by the cdc.

those who are missing the taks tests are definitely going to have to make up those days though.

My SS goes to school in Clear Lake and they are not making up all the time they missed from Ike. They might have made up a day or two, but no where near all the time they missed.

  • Rumor that I am hearing is that they will ask for waivers to have it excused, especially if they have already taken TAKS.  Schools that closed this past week will need to make up TAKS the week they return.  That is only rumor though, obviously it depends upon the school and the school district.

Can you really believe that if they tacked on days to the end of the year, that kids would show up?  Think of all the vacations/trips/summer school/summer camps that are already planned.
