Help! Really lame medicine question

I have not been feeling great since yesterday. I have a crazy headache, sore throat, runny nose, etc. I took a full dose (2 pillls) of extra strength tylenol yesterday at 4:30 and another at 10:30. I was told by a friend that she did not think I could take anymore until 4:30 this afternoon. Is this tru because my doctor has not mentioned this. Also, is there anything else I can take for decongestion that would be better than the tylenol? My doctor didn't put anything on the meds list for this. Lame, I know.

Re: Help! Really lame medicine question

  • You can take Tylenol every 4 hours, although your doc will probably tell you not to do it for weeks on end.

Are you taking straight Tylenol? My doc approved any Tylenol products, including Tylenol Cold. For a sore throat, I use Cepacol to numb, also on my safe list. For a general decongestant, I use Sudafed (it can't be the PE version, though - has to be straight Sudafed - the kind you get behind the counter), but it sounds like you need something more along the lines of a cold medicine.

  • Everyone's OB is different, but mine had me take either plain Mucinex or plain Sudafed.  Nothing multi-symptom or PM version.  Good luck!  Being sick while pg is hell!  :)

  • yeah. I was taking reg. extra strength tylenol because it was all I had at home. I was pretty positive that the other tylenols (cold and sinus, etc) were fine, but I was too tired to go get it and DH had to work til 11. I  have just heard so many different versions of how much of this I can take that I was getting confused.
  • My doc is pretty laid-back, but he is all for tylenol. ?Whatever it takes (within obvious levels of reason) for me to function pain-free is ok with him. ?

I have taken two each night for weeks to control hip pain, and when I told him I tried to go with just one, he very politely reminded me that I weigh more now and that one Tylenol is not going to do anything. ?So remember that as well - you weight more and might need more meds!!

  • My doctor said not to take more than 4gm (4000mg) of tylenol each day.  So if you're taking two tabs of extra strength, according to my doc you should only take four doses a day.  And for congestion, plain Sudafed was recommended.

    Hope you feel better!

Ditto this. From a nurse. Space it out so that you are only taking it every 6 hours. Your friend would have technically been correct about the time :)
