Pool Safety

Watching Super Nanny and they're doing a segment on pool safety. How many of you have in ground pools? What type of safety devices do you have? Drowning is my #1 fear and I don't think I could live in house with an in ground pool - maybe an above ground.

Re: Pool Safety

  • Fences, sensors, gates... you name it, we have it.

  • I just can not believe this family and their attitude about the pool. WHo lets their kids ride a scooter around a pool without supervision?????? Common sense?
  • we don't have a pool but my in laws have a huge in ground pool.  It scares the crap out of me but they do have a chain link fence all around it and it gate is locked.   The girls actually start swim lessons tomorrow I am hoping it will teach them some safety to

  • When we first moved into this house I had nightmares of finding Emily at the bottom of the pool. It's in ground. I made DH put up a huge fence shutting it off and I feel much better. The locks are difficult for me to even open.
  • We have an inground pool and spa. As far as safety measures are concerned, all doors leading to the pool are alarmed (separate from the house alarm system). We have an alarmed fence around the pool, with gates off the deck and floating pool sensors. And, in the fall/winter months, we have a crazy strong pool cover, which is kid tamper proof.

However, even having all of this, the only sure way to prevent an accidental drowning is to never leave your child unsupervised. I don't ever foresee a time when our kids will ever be left unsupervised outside, much less near our pool.

  • We have a mesh fence around ours.  I'm confident DD can't open it anytime soon, but because our lot is on a steep slope, I am worried she could get above it and jump over (hard to explain without a picture).  She never plays outside without me watching closely, but I'd like to get a sensor as well.  I honestly wish we didn't have it - it scares me and it's expensive to maintain.
  • Because I am going through a scenario right now with my cousin regarding the pool, I want to tell you all something we found. They have a 5 ft gate around the pool, as well as locks everywhere. The twins' room has a window that goes out to the pool. Even though the safety gate is on, they just learned how to open their window and sneak out. Just something you normally might not think about for "pool safety".. It isn't how Devyn fell in the pool, but it's ironic how they figured this out DAYS before he drowned.

So, my advice, have SENSORS around the ENTIRE pool.

Also, the docs told us that a child can drown off of a tablespoon of water. Therefore, while days ago I was considering putting JB in swim lessons, I think I may just teach him myself now, I don't want to take any chances.

Sorry to butt in- just surfing... can't sleep.
