If you use formula...

I just gave DS his first bottle of formula to prepare him for this weekend when I'll be going OOT ::dances on desk:: and it got me wondering...

How did you decide which formula to buy, and why?  Do you use one of the expensive brands?  Did anyone switch to a generic brand once they got out of the hospital?

I never read formula posts or thought about this before now, and now I'm curious.

My sis-in-law who has 3 had good experiences with Good Start. I took her recommendation - and am glad I did!
  • We were started on Enfamil Lipil (yellow can) in the hospital, but it turned out that it made SP very gassy and fussy.  So we switched to Enfamil Gentlease (purple can).  Once we realized that the Target brand was the exact same thing as Enfamil (Target lists Enfamil's ingredients right on their own label next to the Target ingredients) we went the el cheap-o route at $14/can vs $35/can.
  • I had free samples of each of the 'big' brands, and just ended up liking the way one mixed better.

I tried switching to a generic but she got mad, mad constipated and it freaked me out and i never used it again.  Could have been total coincidence, but c'est la vie.

  • I used a couple of different brands to check and kept what "felt" right.

I don't buy store brand... I rarely buy store brand food for myself so why would I for DD, KWIM?

  • I just started using Similac cause that is what the LCs at the hospital gave me to supplement with.  We asked pedi and they were like that's fine so we just stuck with that.  I don't use generic though.  I just collect up formula checks and BRU coupons and buy it when it's on sale or whatever.  And I happened to have free samples that they had sent me that I *almost* threw out cause I got them when I was still PG cause I was like whatev I'm going to BF but something made me hold on to them.  Glad I did :)
  • We started with Similac at pedi's recommendation, then switched to the store-brand equivalent at the store we usually shop at, gradually.

  • Daycare would provided Similac Isomil included in their price so we started with that.  It was pricey, but since we were only supply 1 bottle a day (they would send him home with one too) and the weekends it was worth it.

Then he started projectile vomitting and the doc suggested a switch.  I asked what she recommended and she said she ended up using different ones for each of her kids- 2 of which are twins.  It just depended on what they liked and what was cheapest.

I tried to research here and on-line.  Then I  just stood in the aisles overwhelmed.  Finally I picked up the Enfamil Lipil simply because it said "closest to breastmilk."  Everything else on it was as much or more then the other ones.

It was pricey so when we knew it would work we switched to the Sam's Club generic of it.  So far no problems.

  • We got 2 cans of Similac and 2 cans of Enfamil sent to us for free - and that's what we've been using.  We did use small "travel packs" of Enfamil first, then started on the cans of Similac, and once they are gone, we will use the cans of Enfamil.  I didn't see a difference between them.

Once we go through the otehr cans (assuming there are no issues), then we may actually switch to a more inexpensive brand, like Target.

  • I BF and then supplement with formula b/c I don't pump often enough at work.  We use Enfamil Lipil.  It's pricey, but I started off with my free can and formula checks and am a sucker to its "most like breastmilk" branding.  I'm a marketing patsy I suppose.  Plus I like all the travel size ready-to-feed bottles we can carry in the diaper bag just in case.

  • We tried a few.....neither of my girls can tolerate Enfamil products.  They puke a brown paste.  My oldest pooped neon blue with the Good Start.

They both ended up on special formula anyway.  We had to try Nutramigen first (insurance) and, again, they hurled up the brown paste.  They both did great on Alimentum.

If it's not working, you'll know to switch.
