When H got the layoff notice back in Jan, I called my benefits administrator and they told me I couldn't call until his last day of current coverage. So I had it in my calendar to call yesterday. I call, they pass me off to someone else. I call her, fax her, and email her, and no response. I call and email again, and ask to be redirected. Talked to a person there, they are processing.
At the end of the day after I'm gone, they email me telling me they need more information. I get them that info today, and they email me saying everything is done and it will take three weeks to get him processed. This whole time I have been stressing that he is right in the middle of a treatment plan and even one day lapse in coverage may result in his condition not being covered, but I email her back again asking if this is going to be retroactive to today? No response.
I am fuucking shitting bricks and ready to cry. Does anyone know - aren't they required to immediately start coverage? A layoff is a qualifying life change to add him to my insurance, but I don't trust these fuuckers. If his MFI doesn't get covered, we're fucked.
Re: Insurance Issue and question
So yesterday his coverage(as is severance ended) or yesterday COBRA ended?
If it's the 1st you can get him on COBRA, and you can do it retroactively
ETA: this is assuming of course that your company doens't come through for you
I just found this website:
https://www.insure.com/articles/healthinsurance/HIPAA.html
It says any lapse of less than 63 days does not equal a lapse in coverage. Could this be true? I would breathe a HUGE sigh of releif. I can still enroll him in cobra, but with him not getting any more paychecks, money is tight so I don't want to do this unless I need to.
I'm probably freaking out for no reason. Thanks for putting up with me

3 weeks? What the hell takes 3 weeks?
When I lost my old job, I never had a lapse and my husband's insurance picked me up the day he filled out the paperwork.

There might be some confusion as insurance companies seem to enjoy making life as difficult for people who actually require their services, but it sounds like you are doing everything right.
