Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Whose kid isn't holding their own bottle?

Jack is almost 11 months old and refuses to hold his own bottle.  He's GREAT with a sippy ... but will NOT hold his bottle.  Not sure if he can't (the Avent bottles are pretty thick around) or if he just won't do it.  I'm wondering if I should try doing formula in a sippy??

Any suggestions?

Oh, and I had a GREAT milkshake last night, lol.

Re: Whose kid isn't holding their own bottle?

  • DD can hold the bottle and sippie cup, but doesnt tilt them. So she can never feed herself!
  • Loading the player...
  • Unfortunately Robbie won't let us hold his bottle anymore :( He gets soooo mad if I even touch it! It makes me sad that my little guy is getting so big and independent.

I do know a few other babies who use Avent bottles that don't hold them. I think the wideness might have something to do with it.

  • Still doesn't really...just to play not to drink but does great with sippy. We will hopefully be weaning the bottle to full-time sippy in the next couple of months so I'm not really worried.

  • DD doesn't either! DCP says she will there if they "talk to her about it." (i.e. Ok you're a big girl now...). I guess I'm kind of guilty because I don't really try to make her. I only see her for an hour in the morning and 2 or 3 at night so I kind of like that time where I'm feeding her.
  • Nope. ?He CAN he just WON'T. ?And he hasn't figure out he has to tilt it back (hasn't figure that out with the sippy yet either).

Where was the milkshake from? And thanks...now I want one. ?;)

  • We use Dr. Brown's glass that are just to heavy for her to hold.  I don't mind though.  When she wants to use the sippy (which she doesn't yet) that will be fine with me.

  • DS can hold his bottles (he uses Avent bottles too) but he won't do it to eat. He likes to play with it sometimes, but he likes us holding his bottle so he can hold his lovey when he is eating. He holds his sippy ok, but we have to tilt the highchair far back so he can drink out of it, or put him on the floor with it.
  • DD will hold it every where but daycare.  She likes to be the "baby" there.  She will drink out of her sippy at daycare though.  She is in for a rude awaking when a new baby joins the club in a couple of weeks.
  • Quinn can, she just usually doesn't.  She does well with the sippy, though.
  • Spider Pig won't hold his own bottle.

He also doesn't try to grab the spoon away from me at meal times, either.

When he wants more, he opens his mouth and looks at me as if to say "Woman, what's your problem?  Put the damn food in my mouth!"

  • Mikey can when he feels like it. But he's much better at holding the tall thin bottles, so we kind of switched. And like PP said I talk to him. I lay him down on the boppy so he's proped up and I say "ok Mikey, you're a big boy. Hold you bottle like a big boy." A lot of the time his attention goes somewhere else and he'll drop his bottle and go play. He rarely finishes a bottle all by himself.
  • nope, not here.  we use dr. brown's wide mouth and playtex drop ins.
  • DS never did--he knew how, but refused to.  He much preferred to have us hold his bottles.  He wouldn't drink formula from the sippy either.  We were just stuck holding his bottles for him. :)

  • Ok, this makes me feel a lot better ... my family all seemed to give me the side-eye when they saw me feeding my (almost) 11mo old like this last weekend.  I will have to experiment with the sippy and see if he will take it from there.  I will be SO glad when I can get him off formula.

  • Same story here.  Landon can hold his bottle but doesn't like to.  He's great with the sippy and we're trying to teach him to tip it back.  I don't really know what to do about the bottle.

  • DS is not holding his bottle and if he does it is only to play with the nipple part of the bottle.  He does great with the sippy cup, so who knows!
  • I won't let DD hold her bottle. Sippy, yes. Bottle, no.

  • We use avent bottles too and she can hold it but only plays with it or takes a sip and then won't drink anymore.  If I really want her to drink it I have to hold it for her.  She does great with a sippy but doesnt want milk or formula in it, only water.  I don't know what we're going to do when it's time to wean....
  • DD won't hold her bottle either and she's almost 14 months.  She only gets one bottle of milk a day now and holds sippies, straw cups, and everything else just fine.  So ::: shrugs ::: a couple of months ago I just quit trying.
  • A will not hold his own bottle or a sippy. He just likes me to hold them. Guess i should work on that.

  • She does sippy's fine and even tips it up.  She can hold her own bottle but only if it's mostly empty and she doesn't tip it for some reason.
