Trying to Get Pregnant

Any TTC horse people out there?

I was wondering if you are planning on continuing riding your horse(s) once you find out your pregnant?  If you do, what month will you stop riding?

I haven't decided yet, but I am worried about falling off and getting hurt... I think they say you shouldn't, but 9 months is a long time out of the saddle!

  • Okay, I totally read your subject line as you asking if anyone was trying to conceive a horse.

  • I'm not a horse person, but I work at a ski area. From everything I've read, both are considered a definate NO at any point in pregnancy. If I'm lucky enough to get KU in the winter, I will gladly give it up for as long as I need to.

    Ha Ha!! Me too!

  • I'm not a horse person now, but grew up around them and I wouldn't ride a horse while pregnant.  To me, there's to many risks.

  • There are sacrifices you need to make while PG & I think this should be one of them.  It is too risky in my opinion to keep riding.

I agree, it's such a short period of time that you will be off the horse, and if it means having a healthy pregnancy that ends with a healthy baby, I would say to stay off the saddle until after the baby is born.  Not worth the risk IMO.

  • I have a couple horses and will give up riding if I get KU. I also will likely have my DH take over stall cleaning (at least pushing the wheel barrow).

I will NEVER load a horse while KU. I once was knocked down and trampled inside a trailer!

My horses will resume their status as lawn ornaments!

I like the stall cleaning idea!  Yikes about the loading incident, I'm glad you were okay.

Yes think about it.........can't throw feed sacks, hay bales, or really push a wheel barrow.  I usually feed at stations out in the pasture---but this can get a little rowdy, so DH my take that over too. He has so much to look forward to--- and he is a 'cattle man' .....not a horse guy!

Sounds like you have a much bigger spread then we do.  We only have 2 horses and they have their own stalls so feeding time is pretty easy, other than the cranky horses pawing at the ground for their food.  I'm sure my husband will make me muck until I get too big to bend over.  What do you use your horses for?  We just ride them around the trails and have done some cattle sorting, but thats it.

I've done some cutting/sorting with my mare. I have a gelding that I did hunters with. We only have the two now--which is plenty for me. I've also got a mess of chickens, 2 dogs/1 cat and usually we are bottle feeding somethign (calf recently).  GL with your ponies & TTC!

I've got chickens too!  They have such a personality, which I didn't expect.  And 2 dogs.  I'd love to have cows, but we don't get the rain needed to support a pasture.  GL with you as well.  I read in the other post about spotting.  Are you k/u'd???

Yes I have a lot of fun just watching the chickens do their thing. We let them in the yard occassionally to go for bugs--its kind of relaxing to watch them hunt and peck.

No....KU last fall but M/C at 8 weeks in Oct. I hesitate to answer those posts b/c then people ask & I don't want to be 'Debbie downer' and say....oh well M/C.

I'm so sorry to hear about your M/C.  I hope I didn't bum you out bringing it up.  I know some girls don't put their pregnancy ticker until after their first app, so I didn't know if that was your situation.  Or I didn't know if you were already a mommy!  Well, GL with TTC!!!  Nice to see another cowgirl in GP!

    Good LORD.

I read this post title as you are attemping to give birth to a HORSE. Tongue Tied

What is it they say about great minds?  Wink

    Indeed!

  • My friend is a horse chiropractor and dresage trainer and rode well into her third trimester.  He son was delivered in a home birth...no complications whatsoever aside from a long labor for her.  I would advise you to ask your doctor or midwife for sure.
  • I am not now, nor will I ever be, trying to conceive a horse.

And if I were KU, I wouldn't be riding on either Wink
