DD stuck her tongue out at DH, WWYD?

Last night dd was already in timeout for acting up repeatedly- and when DH told her to make sure she was sitting on her bottom, she stuck her tongue out at him!!! He was furious, and he gave her a very stern talking to- borderline yelling. I get that he was upset and I am not even sure how I would have handled it (I was in the kitchen cooking) so I am looking for suggestions. Keep her in time out longer, take away a toy or privilege? HELP?!?!

P.S. This is a new thing from dd and I am pretty sure she must have picked it up at daycare unless some shows on Noggin feature kids sticking out thier tongues! LOL

  • I'd laugh.

Did she do it the one time or has it been going on for a while?

  • I did that to my grandpa when I was little. I got such lectures and my fun toys and TV taken away.  never ever did it again.  I don't know how I would handle it with G.  the corner seems to really work for us.
  • Both of my kids do this.  We discipline our oldest (she's almost 5) if she does it.  We just ignore it though if our youngest does it (she's almost 2).
So, if you think she is doing it with the intention of being bad, then I would discipline her.

I had a hard time picturing it and I have to admit I cracked a smile, but DH was not sure how to handle it and I think he was more surprised than anything. But yes, this was the first time she did it- hope it's the last!;) Somehow I don't think we are that lucky- shes got her mama's attitude!

  • In that scenario, I would discipline.  Actually, I would threaten the soap in the mouth.  Works for Joey --- but I know not everyone agrees with that.

It's a total sign of disrespect, which is not tolerated.  Since she was already in time out, and this was her first time doing it, I would have done exactly what your DH did.  Stern talking to and include what the future punishment would be if she were to do it again.

  • I probably would have just started her timeout over again.

    me too?

  • I wouldn't ignore it, b/c then it's bound to happen again. She's old enough to understand WHY she's being punished and it will make her not want to disrespect her daddy like that again if she's punished for it. I would have given her another timeout for that and when she came out of time out I would have reminded her that she cannot do whatever it was she was in timeout for at first and that she cannot poke her tongue out b/c it's not nice.

  • I would probably tell my DC that this was unacceptable behavior and remind him/her of the consequences if it continued.  But, I send my DS to his room for TO, so it's not really an issue.  He goes and comes out when he's ready to behave.  TO never really worked for him b/c it become a power struggle.  And, if he's in his room, he really doesn't have an opportunity to further aggravate the situation.  My 2 y/o DD gets a TO and if she stuck her tongue out I would do what I said above and leave it at that.  If the behavior continued, she'd get another TO.
  • You know me, I'd snatch it out.

  • B was picking up this tongue out/spitting habit whenever she was around her friend and honestly, I wither ignored her or threatened her with things like "lets go home".

I think when you make a huge deal out of it, they probably will do it more to get a rise out of you.
