NBR: Inmates working 3 doors down?

There are inmates working 3 doors down from my house.  I've never seen this before in a residential neighborhood.  They are doing utility work, or so says the sign.  They were all in the van when I drove by.  These are tax evaders, right? LOL.  Several of you guys have been to my house, I do live in Durham, but closer to Brier Creek than anything.

Staying inside with the doors locked today.

  • Of course they are tax evaders! :)

Seriously though, that would really creep me out.  I have never heard of that either.  I don't care what they did, if they have to come in a van with an escort they can just stay away!

  • Yeah any type of inmate in a neighborhood doesn't sound like a good idea to me.  I'm just glad I have my trusty guard dog here to let me know if anyone's lurking in the bushes! :)  She can sound and look pretty scary if she wants to, and I have a feeling she could get nasty if someone tried to hurt me or Liam.

  • I would not be pleased. All though I am one of those people that think if they are out working, they should be on a chain gang. DH tells me all the time, that if they are allowed out, they are like minor fellows about to be let out, but I don't care they are STILL in prison and were put there for some reason, and I don't want them on my street!!!

  • eh.  Believe me, they are well-supervised.

and if they're working, it means they may be getting paid (very little, like $1.00 per hour or something of the sort), but it gives them a hope of rehabilitation once they are released.  You have to have some kind of money to get back on your feet or some outlet to find a job, which helps them not re-offend, which protects society & your tax money as a whole Smile

  • I'm with Blair on this one.

And honestly, I think it's kind of sad that so many people fear this. I mean, sure, you've got a perfectly reasonable right to fear rapists and murders and whatnot. However, the prison system as a whole is totally fucked & this is one of the few ways prisoners can learn to behave in a semi-normal fashion. They have to apply for these jobs & be hired, they earn money (and self confidence, work ethic, understanding of society). Plus, it's the only time they ever get to leave the prison & they are well supervised. Generally these are people with a history of non violent crimes.

  • Just so you know-People can work in a work release program and get out of jail-go to work-go back to jail at night. They work in public places, that we would all go to, and are usually unsupervised. These people are generally non-violent...they have to earn this priviledge. idk. it wouldn't bother me b/c I know they're supervised...plus i'm just used to dealing with inmate patients...
