Breastfeeding

If you've had thrush PLEASE come in!

Diagnosed with thrush today!  My son has no symptoms but my nipples have been killing me.

What worked for you and your LO?

My plan:

For me: Diflucan orally, wash breasts w/ water+vinegar solution after each feeding, change breast pads frequently, wash all bras/clothes in hot water + vinegar, acidophilus (culturelle)

For him: Nystatin orally, culturelle

For laundry: wash everything in contact w/ my breasts in hot water w/ vinegar.

For pump/bottles/pacis: sterilize daily while being treated. Is using microwave sterilizer good enough?

Does this sound ok? He has no diaper rash but is cloth diapered (part time). I will wash his diapers in hot +vinegar. Do I need to systematically wash all our towels, sheets, etc?

I planned to use the vinegar rather than bleach, but if I must use bleach I'm willing to. thoughts?

I have been reading online and am scared stiff now b/c I have read about how resistant this can be.

Any tips/advice would be awesome---thanks so much

  • Jack Newman's All Purpose Nipple Ointment (APNO) is a god-send...

you'll need a perscription for it, and you'll have to go to a compounding pharmacy, but it's sooooooooooo worth it.

  • I did all that...plus,

Nystatin ointment on nipples after each feeding (does not need to be wiped off before next feeding)

Hung my bras out to dry...the sun will help bleach and get rid of yeast

I also took grapefruit seed (not to be confused w/ grape seed) extract 3x a day.  Diflucan didn't work for me so after a month on that LC suggested to take grapefruit seed extract (drugstore.com)

     I didn't go crazy w/ towels/linens, but anything I physically on me I changed/vinegar treated regularly.

    Good Luck!

  • great tips! Thanks! I will get something for my nipples - nystatin or the all purpose cream. I have heard that about UV light killing the yeast. I have been after my H to get a clothesline up for the cloth diapers. I'll have him do that right away! I hope the diflucan works but I did read about grapefruit seed extract too and may look into that if the diflucan doesn't help.
  • In addition to all those - I've been using Lotrimin on my nipples (the stuff for jock itch).

  • Just curious - what were your symptoms and did you see your OB or an LC about it?

  • For us, my son had symptoms first and then I developed them later on.  DS had white patches all in his mouth and on his lips.  For me, my nipples burned and I had shooting pain in my breasts when he nursed.  We tried the Nystatin and Diflucan and neither worked.  I was sterilizing everything (try the Medela microwave steam bags....they are much faster) and putting vinegar on my nipples too.  The only thing that ended up working for me and DS was Gention Violet.  It is available OTC but you might need to call around your local pharmacies to see who carries it.  I think I paid $1.82 for the 1 oz bottle?  VERY INEXPENSIVE.  It is very messy, but it works.  All I did was dip a Q tip in the solution and swab DS mouth with it before feeding him.  After the feeding, we both were purple and some clothes were stained, but it was gone within 4 days after we had sufferred with it for 6 weeks!  I also swabbed my nipples directly with the GV and let that dry on before reapplying the breast pads.  I highly recommend.

    Good luck!

  • BF has been a big struggle for me and my nipples hurt A LOT early on b/c my son's latch wasn't great.

After easter though, it seemed to be better -- much less painful (just a little tender when he'd first latch)

Over the past week they have gotten progressively sore, hurting both during and between feeds. Had a burning feeling between feeds and shooting pains in my breasts. My nipples and onto the aerola are bright, bright pink.

    My son has no symptoms.

I saw the LC today who diagnosed me. She called my OB and asked her to call me in diflucan. They also asked me to call my pedi to get her to call in an Rx for my son.

    What symptoms are you having?

I'm having a severe burning sensation in my right nipple and a less bothersome burning in my left when I feed DS. It gets much worse the longer I feed him, and the pain lasts for a little while after we're done. I saw my OB and they don't think it is thrush unless it is in very early stages. DS has no symptoms and the pain is the only thing I'm experiencing. It concerns me because I wasn't having any pain for almost a week and then all of a sudden I was burning...

  • Honestly it sounds like thrush to me. Why don't you try the GV as the PP suggested? It can't hurt anything and is available OTC.

Other things my LC told me: air dry nips as much as possible, change nursing pads after every feed, no lanolin right now (not sure why?)

Also I read online about the vinegar thing, so I made a solution of 1 c. water and 1 Tbsp vinegar. I rinse this over my nipples w/ a clean cotton ball (don't recontaminate the solution!) after each feed. Then I apply the topical nystatin cream. You could try the vinegar wash + lotrimin since it's also OTC.  also, wash anything in contact w/ your nipples (bras, etc) in hot w/ vinegar added. Also daily sterilize everything that goes into your LO's mouth.

Maybe if it's early you can get rid of it this way w/o needing prescriptions?

    Good luck!

  • I just took the Diflucan, and it went away.  I did use hot water for my bras and switched to disposable pads.  I know that many women do have a hard time getting rid of it, but the medication did work very well for me.
