Mine was pretty painful, but only during the actual procedure, once it was over I was fine except for some bloating. It only takes like 10 minutes. Take 4 advil beforehand.

I took 2.5 Naproxen (sp? Rx for Alleve) beforehand so it wasn't too bad. It was uncomfortable for most of the time and only hurt badly for 5-10 seconds. Afterwards I was bloated the rest of the day but had no cramping (thank you Rx). I felt a little sore and had some very light spotting for a few days afterwards. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
I took 2 advil about an hour before. The procedure itself didn't take too long. It wasn't comfortable, but the pain only lasted for a few moments during the actual HSG. I had bloating the rest of the day but felt back to my ole self by the next morning. Just take a pad or liner for any leakage, and I would take someone with you just for support. For me, thinking about it was way worse than the actual procedure. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
I took 3 Advil before I went in and it was relatively painless, kind-of like a pap. It was also fast. I was in and out of the room in under 15 minutes. You will have some discharge following the procedure, but mine was gone by the following day.
mine was really easy. I totally flipped myself out thinking that I was going to pass out (I usually do) and literally it was like 1.2.3. I asked the dr. when he was going to start inserting the dye and he was like, I am already done. All I had to do at that point was roll to each side to get everything to spill. It was over fast. As everyone said - take 4 ibuprofin about an hr before the test. I had some cramping after, but I went back to work with one of those stick on heat patches (I can't remember the brand, but the red box) and it was all good. Also try to keep your pelvis relaxed when they do the catheter - all my drs doing test and IUIs have told me to do so and it eases things a bit (our natural reaction is to tense that area up and lift up our bottoms)
Take the advil or other pain meds beforehand. ?My OB was an @ss and kept messing with my cervix, so mine was painful. ?But don't live it twice; yours may be fine. ?Do bring a pad for some discharge later. ?If there is any pain, it is usually only for less than a minute. ?GL!

Mine was really easy. I took 800mg of ibuprofen an hour before, drove myself there and home, and didn't have any cramping or pain. My nurse said that if you usually have cramps with AF, that it may hurt some. I don't often have cramps, and it was fine. It was uncomfortable and weird, but not painful for me. Good luck! I hope yours goes very well! At least it's over quickly!

I had mine last week. I didn't have any Advil and wasn't sure if Aleve/Tyenol would be acceptable, so I didn't take anything.
My DH was able to go back with me, which really helped alot. He sat with me on the table talking to me trying to calm me down beforehand. Then when the procedure start, the RE let him stand on the opposite side of my head. He held my hand, patted my hair and just kept telling me it would be over soon and it would be ok.
This was a huge help to me. I get very anxious in new situations.or when I don't know exactly what's going to happen. So I worked myself up a lot for the HSG.
The procedure itself wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. It hurt when the RE put the speculum in place. It felt like he was screwing it in place, not sure if that's true though. The solution they clean your cervix with burned some. The worse part by far was when they expanded the balloon. It was so much pressure at that point. I was in tears while that was going on.
But then they release the dye, the pressure is relieved and you get to see the dye flow through. I thought that part was pretty cool to see. Thankfully everything was clear for me.
I did cramp and spot afterwards, but I expected it. I apologize for the length of this. Best of luck to you. Please let us know how it goes.
