Moms who BF

I am having trouble getting my son(who is six months) to take a botte.  He has in the past, but the last two times i have tried to feed him he refuses.

I had pumped a bottle this morning before i went for a run and when i came back he wouldnt eat it. I didn't know what to do b/c i had just pumped.  He gags and just starts screaming. I tried for 45 minutes, gave up and fed him his cereal then nursed him.  Do I  just keep offering so he gets use to it? Or hope that i can continue to breastfeed long enough that he will go to a sippy?

I am starting to train for a marathon so i know there might be times i need to pump or give a bottle.

any advice?

  • Is he sitting up on his own?  You might be able to just try going straight to a sippy cup now.

Or maybe try a different kind of bottle?

Also, my DS would never take a bottle from me...but had no problems taking it from DH or his daycare provider.  Maybe try having someone else feed him?

  • A few things..  even if you just pumped, you can still nurse.  There won't be as much in there, but you will have some.

If he's gagging, it sounds like what my DS was doing - the nipple was too long on the bottles.  I tried everything, finally found the FirstYears Breastflow bottles.  They're weird, they're 5-7$ each 5oz bottle, they have a double nipple... but they're shallow and he took them without gagging & batting it aside.  He still uses them.

Try the milk at diff temps.  Try having someone else bottle feed - if you're trying he might just smell you and want the real thing instead.  Keep trying, try diff bottles, and if he's 6m you can try the sippy now & see how it goes.  Couldn't hurt.  Good luck.

  • thanks for the suggestions. He is sitting up and i did try the sippy this morning b/c i was determined not to waste any breastmilk. But he made such a mess.

He is such a mamas boy that i am worried he will never take a bottle from me.  And i was hoping to wean soon.

  • my daughter won't take a bottle from me.  in fact, she won't take a bottle from anyone if she sees me in the room.  good luck!
  • I'll second what some of the pp said.  Neither of my girls would take a bottle from me.  DD#2 wouldn't take one if I was in the house or the area.  If she could sense me, she wasn't touching that thing.  It took new sitters days or weeks of trying to give her bottles before she'd take them from anyone new too (though she took them from DH well enough after the first disaster).  Can your DH try to give him a bottle when you're not home?  Have you had anyone give him bottles before?  Unfortunately, it's one of those things that if you give them too early you risk nipple confusion and too late and you risk them not taking one.  Try having your DH or someone else give a bottle without you home.  Have them try different nipples and bottles if needed.  Also different temperatures help.  DD#2 would not ever take a cool/cold bottle.  She had to have hers heated up to the day she stopped bottles.  DD#1 would take them cool or room temperature.  Every baby's different.
  • I had the same problem at 8 mos.  I could get a little down him in a medicine cup (they are small and squeeze together so less mess.)  Then we found out he would drink from a straw cup.  No other sippies or bottles, but straws worked.  Good Luck!
