Preemies

~TheShellSeeker~

Hi Vera!  How are you?  I was looking at your ticker and I can't believe John is over 8 months!!  Holy cow where does time go??  I haven't been on the boards much (esp. the C-bus board), but I think I remember seeing a while back you were looking for a new pedi -- did you find a better fit?  I am so sorry you had so much trouble with PA -- I feel horrible since I know I was one who referred them.  I too have felt a bit frustrated at times with Dr. R (esp. given his delay in referring Bennett for PT), but in hindsight I really haven't pushed things much either.  I think we're staying put for now, but I hope you have landed somewhere even better!   :-)

I hope all is well with you!  Take care!

Sara

  • Hi Sara!  I haven't been on the c-bus board much at all lately but I'm here and on SAIF daily.  I should stop back in and see how the ladies are doing more often.

You know, I wrote down the recs for pedis, but we never did change.  I found out later that it was my insurance company denying the rsv shot for april and that there wasn't anything Dr. R could do to change it.  So, I simmered down.  It still doesn't change the things he's done that I haven't been keen on, but it doesn't make me mad enough to walk (yet).  Part of it has also been that life is so hectic day by day and I've been sick for the last month (first my back then an upper respiratory thing) that I just don't have the energy to start interviewing.

Time certainly does fly!  I hope you feel better and that PT goes well.  I have a developmental appt for John in a couple of weeks out at Riverside.

    Take care,  Vera

  • I'm so sorry you haven't been feeling well!  I hope you are on the mend!

Good luck with the developmental assessment at Riverside.  We've seen Kathy there since B&K were in the NICU (they've had follow-ups at 3 - 6- 12 mo adjusted).  My biggest piece of advice -- if they even remotely mention PT/OT, get a referral from Dr. R immediately and coordinate w/Childrens asap.  Kathy mentioned at the 6 mo appointment that she thought B would benefit from PT.  We mentioned it at his 9 mo pedi appt. and Dr. R suggested to take a wait & see approach (B has always been a bit behind K -- boys develop slower than girls, I guess, and I've been a more "wait & see" kind of mom all along anyway).  So finally at his 12 mo appointment Dr. R called in the referral to Childrens.  It took Children's over a week to call me to set up the appointment (I tried calling them, but they wouldn't speak to me until they were "ready"), then it took over a month to get in just for the assessment.  Bennett was categorized a "priority 1" based on his age, but it still took over 6 weeks to actually get him in to start his PT and at that they are only able to see him every-other week (he is supposed to be seen weekly, but we figured this is better than nothing).  So in all it has taken over 2 months just to get him set up for PT.   I also caved in and had Help Me Grow come out to do an assessment on both of them -- I meet with our coordinator tomorrow to get her take on the results.  She doesn't think Kendyll will qualify and even if Bennett qualifies for PT through them she said their wait list is very long, too.  I hope John doesn't need it, but my advice is the earlier you start the set up process, the better! :-)

    Take care!

  • Thanks for telling me your story!  Funny, because I suspect that John will need PT of some sort.  We saw Kathy, too, and I really liked her alot.  At the last assessment, John was having a reflux episode and cried the entire time so she had a hard time doing her assessment.  She asked D and I alot of questions about what John could and couldn't do and from that, she determined he was on time.  D thinks she was being generous, however.  I think in the last couple of months, he's fallen behind.  He is just now starting to show an interest in toys and holding objects (at 8 months!).  There's a host of other things, too, that I suspect may be problematic.  And I won't even get into feeding solids - that's a disaster.  I see the baby food jars in the grocery saying 4 months and older and John can't even eat it at 8 months yet.  (sigh)  If Dr. R is even considering PT, I'm gonna push for it.

We started Help me grow right after John was born but it seemed useless at the time.  John was fine and we didn't have time for all of the meetings that they wanted to do.  It was more a pain than helpful so we backed out of it.  I suppose if it's needed, we could start it up again.  Good luck with that.  Who is your coordinator?

Please keep me updated with how PT goes.  I hope B does really well and learns fast!
