I'm interested in learning about waldorf education. ?What is a good book to get me started on learning about the philosophy and to begin some practices with my DS?

  • Hi Melissa  :)  I did some research on Waldorf Schools for my thesis.  I looked at www.awsna.org.  Montessori is similar and maybe also worth looking at, www.montessori.org and www.summitmontessori.org.  And because it was an architecture project, my book sources are desing related, but you may find them interesting - check out Hertzberger's Architecture of Schools for his model Montessori School and Dudek's Lessons for Students in Architecture for Peter Hubner's Waldorf School.
  • Be prepared! The more you start looking into alternative educational philosophies, the more you will freak out and find your public schools inadequate! hahaha!

Anyway, mothering.com has some very good forums on the various types of educational philosophies. I highly recommend going there to read some and post and ask questions.

My husband and I are both educators, so I've been interested in this type of thing for a long time. I'm really interested in the idea of a Waldkinder (Forest Kindergarten) too. Good stuff. Anyway, yeah. www.mothering.com

  • thanks, kim! ?what great info. ?now I have an excuse do look at some design related publications! ?It sure has been awhile!

what's new with you? ?hope you both are well!?

  • De-lurkifying to say that you might also be interested in Reggio Emilia!
  • I have several books on Waldorf early education and things you can do at home. By far the best I've read is You are your child's first teacher by Rahima Baldwin Darcy. She focuses on the ages from birth to age 5, but has several references for books about Waldorf for the older ages. My public library had a copy, so you might be able to look through it before buying.

Also good but as a supplement to the first book are Beyond the Rainbow Bridge (also focuses on the younger ages through kindergarden), Seven Times the Sun, and All Year Round

  • We're doing great - especially since I got my first ARE pass letter yesterday!  I thought I trainwreck bombed it, but I managed to pass structural systems.

How are you guys?  How's the bebe?
