1st Trimester

Hi there, I was going through yesterday's posts and I saw in the Natural childbirth post that you have scoliosis.  So do I... So I was wondering did your doc say that the epidural may be a problem because you have scoliosis, or because of the actual rod?  I never had surgery, so I don't have a rod.  I haven't had a chance to ask my doctor yet, I have my 12 week appt. on Monday so I will see what she says.

Anyways, I'm thinking that minimizing weight gain will be the key to helping my back through this pg.  I've already gained 5 lbs though :(

Love your ultrasound pic btw!!!  I totally see those elf ears!!!  So cute :)

  • Hi!

I have heard of epidural problems because of the curvature of the spine and because of the rod (mine is right where an epi would be issued). I have also heard of people having epidurals with no issues whatsoever. Definitely talk to your doctor, and if you have had xrays, get a copy of those and talk to your?anesthesiologist about your options.

I need to have the interview with my?anesthesiologist?to get an actual assessment. I am planning on going natural because the idea of having something go wrong with the epi scares me more than the pain of childbirth!?

Weight is also an issue. I am gaining at a slow pace but started my pg a little heavier than my orthopedic surgeon suggested (not overweight, but he almost wanted me underweight to start). I go to the gym and had the help of a prenatal personal trainer to make a plan that would strengthen my back and give me a better chance of "back support" throughout the pg.?

GL and keep me posted. Good to know I'm not the only curved one out there :)?

  • Good to know!  Luckily I had x rays last year at the same provider so they should have it in my file.  I'll see what my doc says on Monday.  I'm guessing I wouldn't be able to interview the anesthesiologist until I'm much closer to the due date.

I'm with you on the epi, I keep telling myself that the pain of childbirth can't be that bad.

Wow I'm surprised your doc wanted you almost underweight before pg!  I really need to recommit to the gym I guess.Surprise
