Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Talk to me about...

using a sippy cup.  I feel like I have heard this is a bad thing, but didn't pay attention as to WHY it's a bad thing.

On the other hand, everyone is telling me I should start using it with Rosie.  So, if you use a sippy cup with your little one...

1.  What do you put in it and how much does your little one drink a day?

2.  When did you start using it?

3.  When do you give it to your little one?  Only during meals?  Hanging out at the park?  etc.?

THANKS!

  • Dentists don't like em.

But I have friends who are dentists who'se kids use sippys!

I gave DD the sippy cup last week to play with.  Last night at dinner time I put water in it and put it in her mouth and put her hands on it to hold it.  She did pretty well for about 30 seconds and then was not happy with it.   I think she was NOT happy that it had water in it.  I may try a little formula in there.

  • I give it to DS but he doesn't "get it".  So right now he isn't really drinking anything, but I put water in it.
  • My pedi told me to start giving it to Mattie at our 6 month appt.  He also said to start out on formula.  He said that it is easier to wean the bottle away later on if they are used to taking formula and milk from a sippy cup.  I gave it to her after that appt., and now she uses it twice a day for juice or formula.  SHe has gotten really good at using it.

Same here.  DS totally figured it out but kept making faces when he would get water instead of BM.  I may have DH try switching one of his bottles to a sippy just to see.  We're in no hurry but I know most pedis recommend getting rid of the bottle by age 1.
