As if I didn't already hate Motherhood enough already...

I have had bad experiences with the staff at the MM in my town twice now and I refuse to go back. I just got my discover bill and noticed a $20 charge for a parenting magazine. I called the 800 number and was told that I signed up for it at MM when making a purchase. I specifically remember being asked if I wanted to sign up and telling them no! Luckily the lady at the magazine company was very nice and cancelled it and refunded the $20. Just makes me so mad that I had to take the time to call and deal with the issue.

  • I'm that kind of person, but I'd totally take a copy of your statement (or even an online printout) showing the charge to the MM store and confront them.

    I'm not saying biitch them out, but definitely confront them.  That needs to be addressed.

  • oh no! when i went in for the first time last week, i signed up for newsletters or something, giving them my info... and i used my credit card for my purchase... does that sound like what happened to you?
  • Argh.  That is aggravating.  I agree with Tae, I'd bring it to their attention ASAP.

    Unfortunately, I think all that would do would make me more upset and raise my blood pressure. The women that work at my local store are so rude and act as if they don't even want to be there. I understand if you are not happy with your job but when you work in retail, you need to at least suck it up while you are there. Both times I have entered that store they give me a look (and I'm pretty sure the one lady is a manager) like, "Oh crap, I have to deal with customers!".

      
  • I went the other day and they said that when you buy something you get a free month copy..but if you buy it with cash it is just the first month then they don't send them..but if you pay on your card they just keep charging you and sending till you catch on ..I said a big NO as well ...hope I don't get any!
  • Yes, I think they need some customer service classes myself. The person there had a serious lack of basic knowledge. I asked her a few questions. She didn't even offer a time when a manager might be there(I asked) or to have a manager call me. I am also plus size and it was REALLY no fun! I work in retail and probably would have been fired for having no customer service skills. They do carry plus size online so I have went that route instead and don't have to deal with people.

    Yes, that is what happened to me. Just watch your credit card statement. The charge didn't show up on mine until about 2 months later. If I wasn't so anal about watching our finances I would never have noticed it.

  • Just had that exact same thing happen to me.  When I called, I asked if I could get the refund and be taken off their mailing list, and she said sure, but it would take 3 weeks.  3 WEEKS?!

  • monlyn9 - you were upsold magazines without your permission.  It is very easy to take off the charge if you do a chargeback.  Magazine circulations have to follow strict rules when selling their magazines to folks.

    Here is how it works - Motherhood and the magazine circulation partner up and benefit from each other in this manner:

    They sell your information (cc #, address, phone)to the magazine circulations and the magazines in return sell their huge customer database with address & phone info.  In this way Motherhood can reach newer customers that they otherwise wouldn't get.  For example someone already receiving a Pregnancy magazine will be sent a flyer by Motherhood because their contact info was sold to Motherhood local stores by that pregnancy magazine.  It's awful and I wish companies would stop doing this. 

    Again, it is easy to take off if you do a chargeback.  You better call them because you will see that charge year after year if you don't take care of it (you'll keep getting magazines too).  

  • Funny that this topic came up...just yesterday when I came home from work there was a baby magazine in the mail. I DO NOT remember signing up for anything. Hmm, wonder if this is thru my local Motherhood store. I did buy my first maternity stuff there about a month or so ago....

  • They did the same thing to me too at Motherhood, while I was PG w/ DD. I specifically told them NO thanks and they did anyway.

    One plus was that Parenting ended up refunding my money and giving me 2 free years out of it (I didn't ask and they didn't tell me, it just started showing up at my house and I saw it was good for 2 years :)

  • Yep, it's really lame.  They ask because they need to reach a certain "quota" of Parenting magazine sign-ups per month, among other things. 

    But from what I'm reading here it sounds like some of the employees are trying to meet their quota anyway even if the customer DOESN'T want the stupid magazine.

    I know because I work at Pea in the Pod part-time.
