Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Mikey has surgery on tuesday! :(

He has a hypospadias:

Hypospadias is a birth defect of the urethra in the male that involves an abnormally placed urinary meatus (opening). Instead of opening at the tip of the glans of the penis, a hypospadic urethra opens anywhere along a line (the urethral groove) running from the tip along the underside (ventral aspect) of the shaft to the junction of the penis and scrotum or perineum.

Anyways he has surgery on Tuesday and he has to have general anesthesia and I'm really scared. He will also be circumcised at the time of the surgery. Any tips/advice about caring for a circ'ed penis or the same from anyone who's DS has had this surgery would help.

Poor Mikey! I have a feeling he's not going to be himself for a couple days after. I can't stand to see him in pain...

Sad

Re: Mikey has surgery on tuesday! :(

  • DS had this surgery in february.  his penis will look sort of gruesome for a few days (bruised, swollen, stitches) for a few days, but all we had to do was apply bacitracin with every diaper change, bathe twice a day, and no straddle toys for 2 weeks.

i don't know if you remember, but he had a RARE complication with anesthesia, and the only problem mikey will have (i'm sure Smile) will just be crying coming out because he is confused.

  • I'm so sorry. I have no advice. I will be praying for him..and you!

K has something called "hydronephrosis", which causes her kidney holds too much fluid. She may have to have surgery one day, but for now, it looks doubtful.

Thanks BW! I'm so nervous so that helps!

I thought I remembered someone on here that LO had one, but I couldn't remember who.

They made us wait until 10 months (not like I wanted to do it sooner). Clearly they didn't with you guys, was there any reason for that or is the 10 month rule just something our doctor does?

  • Good luck with the surgery! Only advice I can give you is for the circ'd penis. Make sure to apply the ointment and gauze over top. Once it's healed, try and remember to pull back the skin of the penis so it doesn't reattach to the head. We're working on UNattaching the skin, almost all the way off now :)
  • Good luck, Mikey! I have no experience with the hypospadias but when DS was cir'd the best thing we got was a tube of Vaseline (the kind you squeeze out of the bottom). When we changed his diaper, we would squeeze it out like whipped cream on his penis to form a protective layer between the penis and the diaper (without having to directly touch and possible cause pain/expose to bacteria). I have heard Vaseline can make diapers less absorbant but that wasn't our experience. I hope all goes well!
  • Although my DS did not have hypospadia, he did have a chordee repair/circumcision at 10.5 months old.  I was extremely nervous about the anesthesia, but he did really well, the worst part was him crying after he came out of anesthesia.  As far as the recovery, it went really well, DS didn't seem too effected by any pain he may have had.  So, all in all, it went much better than expected.  Good luck to you and Mikey!

i'm not sure why they did it so early.  we went to a ped. urologist at a teaching hospital, so this was a pretty "easy" thing for him to do, i guess.  DS also had chordee, so he had a lot of stitches and reconstruction & they weren't sure until they opened him up if there would be a need for a 2nd surgery.  thank goodness there's not. Smile

shepherd was his normal self in a couple days.  i really think it was harder on us than it was him.

  • I don't have any info/advice, but I just wanted to say good luck. I'd be scared too, but I'm sure everything will go as planned. Hopefully he'll be feeling like his old self shortly after the surgery. GL
  • My son just had his surgery two weeks ago today.  DS had the  hypospadias w/chordee so there was quite a bit of work that needed done and his original opening was all the way at the bottom of the shaft.

DS surgery lasted about 2.5 hours which were very stressful but went relatively quickly.  He came out of anathesia very quicklyl and was awake by time they got him to the recovery room.  The called us back and I immediately fed him and we were heading home about an hour later.

We had to double-diaper him until Tuesday when they removed the catheter, the dr. warned us that is would hurt/burn the first time he peed after the cath was removed. We ds tried to pee and it hurt and he refused to go, we ended in the ER about 12 hours after the cath was removed and they reinserted and had that cath removed on Monday.

DS was back in daycare on Tuesday and is doing great, it hardly looks like he had surgery.  I agree with pp that you just need to be careful when changing his diaper after the bandages are removed that he doesn't stick to the diaper.  We got a tube of surgical/ky jelly from the dr. and that worked really well.

When they removed this second cath the dr told us that DS looked great that he had almost healed completely on the outside and the stitches were almost dissolved.

We go today for a follow-up with the surgeon.  Sorry this is so long, I know your concerns and they are all very valid.  Mikey will do fine and it is truly harder on the parents then the baby.

Good luck and I will keep you all in my prayers.
