When to you put "shoes" on them?

Cameron is starting to experiment with standing on his own.  He can go from a seated in a chair position to a stand by himself several times and can definitely stand while holding on to something.  He can't crawl yet, and can't pull himself along anything like the couch but I feel like this is soon and once he does that he will be walking very soon after.  I'm thinking he'll be able to toddle a couple of steps by his adjusted birthday in June.

So when do you put soft shoes on them like Robeez?  Are they even necessary?  Do you use Robeez type soft shoes to train them to wear real shoes?  I really don't have any clue.

TIA!

  • We've been putting Robeez on Max for a few months...they're great for keeping socks from getting lost! LOL

They can start wearing soft soled shoes at any time, but they shouldn't wear hard soled shoes until they are walking well on their own. Bare feet are actually best because it helps the foot strengthen on it's own. E wears soft soled pedipeds when we are out and about, but she is always in bare feet at home :)

  • Marino has teeny feet with lots of baby fat still on them, so he's probably not walking anytime soon. But I started putting shoes on him when he's at daycare b/c the mat they crawl on is slippery and the shoes help with traction.
  • I bought some squeaky shoes from pipsqueakers.com to encourage them to take steps. The shoes were a riot, but since the guys were barely learning how to use their feet the shoes made it hard for them to take steps - but they loved bouncing from side to side to make the shoes squeak.

Once the novelty of the squeaky shoes wore off, I didn't put them in shoes until they were walking well. They are still always barefoot at home, and they only wear their shoes when we leave. They get all pshyched up when they see their shoes and start waving their little arms and saying "dahhdah" (how they say byebye)

  • Oh, and they wear See Kai Run shoes. They're expensive, but they've been holding up really well and they are super flexible - my guys didn't have any trouble at all adapting to walking with them on.
  • As pp said, bare feet are best when learning to walk, but soft soled shoes like Robeez or the target brand that are the same, work wonders at keeping socks on! hooray!
  • Like people have said go with bare feet - that is best for beginning walkers/cruisers.

Since Olivia was 2 before she actually walked I put Robeez style shoes on her when we went out simply because she was too big to just be in socks - people assumed she could already walk.

If you are out somewhere where bare feet is not appropriate than a hard soled shoe is best because they provide better traction than the soft soled shoes.

  • I put them on Cameron before he could crawl or walk.. Sounds like your little one will be walking before crawling!
