Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone familiar with dog eye infections?

Just curious. My dog had dried up gook around her eye and an very occasional (not a lot) of green puss that comes out of her eye, maybe once or twice in a tiny amount. Anyone seen this on their dog? We just got our backyard done and I am thinking she may have eaten some fertilizer. I have been keeping a good eye on her when she goes out there but it is possible she snuck a bite. My dog loves dirt!

  • Most dogs will get dried up gook like that. Especially schnauzers. My mom has 3 and has to clean their "boogers" almost daily...they are outside A LOT.

  • We just had our pooch treated for an eye infection.  She had green goop coming out of both eyes.  We knew she wouldn't handle the eye drops well so they just put her on an antibiotic for a week.  Just make sure you keep wiping it out -- if it doesn't clear up in a few days, call the vet.  Hope the pup is OK!

  • My dog had an eye infection and I put a warm tea bag on her eye while she was laying down. I did this for 3 days and it went away after that. Make sure some of the tea gets in the corner of her eye.

You're right but this is definatlely different than the normal gook. This is like excessive around her eye. When I first noticed it (2 days ago), she was even having trouble blinking. I wanted to see if it got better on its own so I am giving her until this evening. It has actually gotten slightly better since the 1st night.

  • Sorry...not familiar with dog eye infections but if they are anything like common cat eye infections maybe it's conjunctivitis (pink eye).  My cat had this last year.  Her eye was really wattery and gooey...ick.

We took her to the vet and we had to give her an antibiotic by mouth for like 10 days 2x a day and we also had to put this gell directly onto her eye ball like 2-3x a day.  I felt bad but she got better.

Hopefully this is at least somewhat helpful.

I hope your doggy gets better! Smile

  • It's typical for dogs to get "crusties" in their eyes, just like we do.  It could just be mild irritation or allergies.  If the green discharge persists, you start to see her squinting or rubbing her eye, or if the white part of her guy becomes really red, though, I'd call your vet.

  • She may have scratched it, you might want to take her in. My boston terrier scratches her big ol' bug eyes all the time so I keep a perscription on hand now.
  • I'm not good with dogs but both my cats are partically blind and have eye issues. My boy has allergies and goops up from time to time. I would just keep an eye on him, he probably didn't eat the fertilizer but probably got some in his eyes and this is the reaction from all those nasty chemicals they use.
  • Something we used to suggest to people at the animal hospital was hot compresses on the eyes to see if it improves the gunk/infection. Like a warm washcloth soaked with water, press on the eye for a few minutes (much easier to do on small dogs) and try that for a day to see if it gets better.

If it doesn't get better you'll probably need to ask your vet if there is anything OTC you can give them for the eyes or an antibiotic.

Just read this...I'd take her in to your vet.  They can do a stain test to see if she's got an abrasion or ulcer on her cornea, which can be very painful and damaging if left untreated.  Again, it could just be allergies, but better safe than sorry! :)

Calling Vet now. She also had red where it's white. I will take her at lunch! THANKS LADIES.

    THIS.

I have a schnauzer as well, and she gets crusties all the time.  Most of the time they're black, BUT she gets allergies (like her mama).

During the spring, she gets red eyes and green gook and sneezes.  But the eye drops that help it are torture for her, so, like her mama, we just battle through it together
