I am in shock, disbelief, and so heart broken right now. My oldest dog who is always such a good girl attacked our neighbors dog tonight. This dog is a very small dog, but they have "grown up" together the past 2 years and have always played great together. Since we have gotten the new dog, we haven't had them play together since the new dog and our neighbor's dog bark at each other from time to time. Nothing crazy, just being dogs.
Well, tonight we decided to let them hang out and see how it went, since they keep trying to play through the fence and stuff. Well as soon as my neighbor sat him down on the deck, my dog attacked him. I'm talking no warning, just picked him up by his neck and shook him. The other dog, which we were originally concerned for just watched. We got to them as fast as we could but we're all traumatized.
The dog seems ok, he has 2 punctured wounds that are not bleeding very much. They called their vet and said that they could bring him in tomorrow first thing to check on him but most likely he is fine as long as he is eating, drinking, barking, running, and acting fine. He is still scared, but all of the above is fine. I just feel horrible.
Re: I am so upset (long)
Our dog (a lab cross) attacked the next door dog (a german shepherd) in the summer. I was sooo traumatized and embarrassed. Now we are fearful to have them meet, especially since they go nuts at the fence (a wooden fencse so they can't see each other)
I am so sorry , but dogs will be dogs. I am sure it will all be fine.
Are the neighbours decent?
omg..i'm so sorry to hear about this
I hope your neighbors dog is ok. Our dog was attacked when she was just 8 wks old (2 pounds)... it was the most terrifiying time. Please keep up posted
Yeah it was at our place. We were right there watching them. Your right they should have been, but we NEVER would have thought this could happen. Both of my dogs are very socialized and dogs are over here all of the time that they are "friends" with.
UGH, I am so sorry!! ((HUGS))
Are your neighbors going to make a big deal out of it? I hope both of the puppers are okay.
I'm sure you're very shaken. It'll be okay.
Maybe your pupper just doesn't like this other dog. Maybe it's a weird chemistry thing. Or maybe it's that time of the doggy month. ;-)
loves ya.
Loves you tooo. I don't know, I can't figure it out. I guess it isn't for me to figure out.
Hey girl, that is so upsetting! ?Even the nicest dog can be unpredictable. ?I watch a lot of dog whisperer, and a lot of times the dog that is attacked is actually the aggressor. ?Now, I'm not sure how much stock to put in it, but the attacking dog is often reacting to something the other dog did that you might not have even seen.
I'm not sure how to rectify it. ?Maybe you could try having both dogs on leashes or under control and see if you can reintroduce them or something. ?Are there any dog trainer types near you??
I mean I definitely think they need to be re-introduced on neutral territory on leashes at some point. Obviously not right away and I don't even know if the other dog's owners care to do it, but we'll see.
I forgot to add, yes we do have some trainers in the area. We took her through all of the obedience classes including K9 good citizen and even took her back when we took the new dog. I am going to call her, and I'm sure she'll be just as shocked.
We also called the lady that runs the doggy day care that she goes to, just to make sure she hasn't observed any aggressive behavior. She would call us if there was something of concern, but I want to make her aware and just double check.
Thank you. Like I said, we're friends and I think that helps. I hope that after sleeping on it and going to the vets, they don't start to resent us and our dogs but so far so good. I mean they are definitely upset, but at the situation not anyone. I just hope it stays that way and their dog is doing ok in the morning. I also hope they let us pay the vet bills.
sometimes when i dog is not feeling well it will act out like that too. maybe took your dog into the vet as well to make sure its not a underlying issue. also what are the genders of all dogs invovled it make play a part in what happened.
Yeah well she was acting fine, but I will call my vet today too. She is a female, and the other dog is a male. They are similar in age, but not size. Like I said they used to play together all of the time and she was actually nicknamed "the gentle giant." Here is a picture from 2 summers ago of them playing.
I'm sorry Lyse. You got some good advice from pp's. I ditto the having her checked out by a vet. You never know and then you can at least rule that out and move on to correcting a possible behavioral problem if that is what you think it is. Maybe she was just being protective of her new sibling in her yard. I would try walking them together if the neighbor is ok with it in a few weeks and see how that goes.
