Sign of ear infection? WDYT?

Hey ladies! It feels like I haven't been on forever!  I have missed you!

Anyway, Kolton is teething (upper molars)  which I thought was the original problem, however, he is now running a low fever, coughing, has a snotty nose and for the last two days keeps doing this weird thing where he scrunches his left ear down to his shoulder.  My friends watched him do it today and suggested ear infection.  He has never had one yet.  (every time I think he has one I take him to the dr. and it's a no)  I am taking him to see the pedi in the morning just in case...

WDYT?

Re: Sign of ear infection? WDYT?

  • Is he cranky?  Worst case is you wasted your time, but you will feel better.  FWIW, I just took DS to the pedi for teething.  nothing else wrong.

  • Don't you HATE teething!  It shouldn't hurt to get teeth!

Very cranky, clingy, and lethargic.  I can barely get the kid to take one nap a day that usually lasts an hour.  However, he took two, two hour naps today!  Poor little guy.  If it is teething, then this has to be the worst yet!

  • Teething was the culprit when I took Jack to the pediatrician for pulling his ear. I felt like I was one of "those" moms! But, I would do it again...you just never know for sure.
  • Pulling on an ear is an old wives' tale symptom of an ear infection. DS was diagnosed with one today - he's had a fever for 3 days (why I took him in), a bit of a snotty nose/cough and has been clingy/lethargic the last day or so.

I would wait until tomorrow morning to see if the fever sticks and then call for an appt.

  • He isn't pulling his ear, though.  He is litterally bring his whole head down and shrugging his shoulder up.  Totally strange.  He has been doing it a lot, too.  That is why I made my friends check it out as well.

I would rather be safe then sorry and be one of "those" mom's as well!

  • OMG!  Just realized I spelled literally wrong and typed bring instead of bringing...geesh I must be tired!
  • I would take him in to check it out.. better safe then sorry right :) DD just got her first ear infection, diagnosed last Friday. Her only symptom was a fever that developed after a couple days of a light cold. She was also a little fussier then normal. I brought her in to urgent care (we were out of town) and as we walked in to see the doctor, I told my mom that this was going to be like every other time and she was going to check out just perfect. I was wrong! If it wasn't for the fever, I would wait it out, but because of that, I'd take him in. Hopefully it's just teething but you never know.

Also, my friend's pedi told her (her DS has had many ear infections) that when a fever develops a few days after a cold starts, it very often means an ear infection. For her that was the only sign her DS had an ear infection. If the fever is there at the start of the cold, it's most likely not the result of an ear infection. This held true for DD as well.. she'd had plenty of colds but never had a fever until this ear infection.

  • If I were you I would take your son to the Dr.'s office, I would rather be one of those moms, but I nearly died due to a massive ear infection (my mastoid bone was filling with fluid and the surgeon believed that if my parents hadn't brought me in I would have died in the next 24hrs).  As usual I am a overly dramatic example, but due to my own experience I am hyper paranoid about ear infections.  Also, ears can hurt due to teeth issues, I am also a front desk girl in a dental office.  It can easily be either an ear infection or simply teething.  HTH
