Trying to Get Pregnant

Rubella Vaccine (MMR)

Hi all,

New here - hi.  :)

We were planning on TTC, and so I had bloodwork done.  Although I had German measles as a baby, and had all the usual MMR vaccines, apparently my test was inconclusive with regard to rubella immunity, so I am supposed to get the MMR again.

My doctor said I should wait three months before TTC after getting the shot.  Since then I've done some online research and it looks like 3 months is an older standard, with the newer one being one month (the rubella portion of the vaccine is live-virus).  Several sites say three months, but the NHS, CDC and some places in Canada (NS Health Board) say one month.

Has anyone gone through this?  Did you wait the full three months, or did you get a different recommendation?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I plan to talk to the nurse when I go in for the vaccine, since I'm pretty sure the health region and the nurses are often not on the same page on this kind of stuff.

Thanks!

  • I have a friend who's 4 months pregnant, and didn't realize she didn't have the Rubella vacine until they did her bloodwork. They just told her not to travel abroad, and they're planning on giving her the vaccine immediately after giving birth. Other than that it wasn't a big cause for concern.

I don't know if your doc would recommend waiting on the vaccine if you don't want to wait the 3 months to ttc, but it doesn't hurt to ask!

Yeah, I asked her that when she gave me the result.  She was pretty big on recommending the vaccine, but did say I could skip it if I wanted, but if I got sick during the pregnancy I would have to get blood taken every time (or something like that).

The chances of me actually being exposed to rubella are pretty slim, and actually my immunity is "inconclusive" not "not immune", but if I'm actually not immune and I did get exposed, it would likely be really, really bad for the baby.  And I'd feel guilty forever.

FYI - I just got my titers done for my new position... all good.. But even with all the vaccines I have gotten in the years I still ended up with the mumps and german measels... so it can happen. I am probably a rare one but still possible. We just had a young girl (15) at work that died from chicken pox. So get the vaccine is my rec!

  • Hi there,

I had the same test and the same borderline results.  I went in and got the vaccine right away.  My doctor and the paperwork they gave me when I went in for the shot said a one month wait was fine but the nurse seemed to think I should wait at least 6 weeks.  We probably aren't going to start trying until October anyway, but I would say wait at least 6 weeks, just to be sure.  A healthy baby is worth the wait!  Good luck!

  • Thanks all. ?And thank you for your kind, tolerant responses, which I didn't get on another board I posted on. ?Much appreciated.
