Babies: 9 - 12 Months

we should close all the schools

b/c of the swine flu. seriously folks - the panic is incredible. 30,000 people a year die from the normal flu. ONE person in the us has died from the swine flu. they aren't closing schools when someone has the regular flu. the panic is RIDICULOUS! also the one death here was a baby who was visiting from mexico. calm down folks. calm down.

oh - also - i love how the school in ny said that 80 kids called out sick and they were really worried b/c kids had been on spring break in mexico. i'm sorry but if i'm a high school kid and i realize i can call out and not get in trouble b/c of the panic i sure as hell_ am taking the day off. it's what teenagers do. that does not mean 80 kids have the swine flu. it means A) people are panicking and B) kids want a free day off!

Re: we should close all the schools

  • I work for a school..so I'm all about the title of your post!! Wink

  • We really DID close our schools for two days a few years back. Over 700 of our 1000 students were out violently ill with the flu, along with almost every teacher. They disinfected the desks, doors, etc.
  • nooooo!!! then they are going to be running around the neighborhood... grocery stores and i'll have to wait in line at the gym bc of capacity. grrr NOOO!!

Then maybe you can clear something up for me.  We are dealing with this here in DFW and they are closing entire districts for a week to two weeks at a time.  Why so long though?  Wouldn't it take maybe a day or two to disinfect?

  • I think the element of unknown here is what's scary. I think people are scared it could "mutate" or something into a more deadly infection. But 2 things to remember to help alleviate panic:

    1) Right now the antiflu prescription meds appear to reduce severity of infection if given shortly after symptoms appear.

    2) As you said, lot of people and children die every year from the "regular" flu, yet we don't live in daily fear of it.

Again, it's hard not to let emotions get the better of you when there's the unknown involved, but I think parents need to try to remember the facts and overall perspective.

  • Amen.

It's totally been "SwineFlu" day on the Nest too... ::: head desk ::: I mean, I'm all for washing your hands, keeping sick kids home, and disinfecting stuff but, really?  This is "The Stand" but with pigs somehow ambiguously involved?  Really, really, really?

If you're a fan of the Daily Show-type sense of humor you have to watch the "Snoutbreak '09" clips... it's seriously hilarious.

  • If I was in school now I would totally be milking this for a day off.

It was right before winter break, so we were on break anyways.

  • Also, I think (and by "think" I mean "epically overreact based on no thought whatsoever") that akiernan's SpiderPig is a danger to the Nest.  He has "pig" in his *name*.  Perhaps we should close the Nest.

I mean, I don't want to be mean but I feel the Liberal Nest Media didn't take my argument seriously before:
