NGPR: Any science teachers in here?

I am working on my Microbiology lab final review and am stuck on one question. Anyone teachers or science buffs out there want to help me?

    What do we call the yellow gel on the bottom of a petri dish? I was thinking "medium" but I think I'm trying to make it more difficult than it has to be.
