am I being too overprotective re: swine flu

I was going to take the boys to the hospital where they were born today because my OBs office is there and I need to have her fill out some paperwork before I can return to work in a couple weeks.  I decided this morning after 3 questionable cases of swine flu in Massachusetts that maybe bringing them to the hospital where so many people go and are sick wasn't such a good idea.  I feel like I'm giving in to the mass hysteria this outbreak may cause, but I also don't want to risk getting my babies sick.  I could just fax the paperwork I guess.  The nurses have been asking when I call to see the boys, but I think it makes more sense to wait.  Am I being dumb?

If you're being dumb, than I am being dumb too. ?Today is Keira's first birthday and I had planned on bringing her to the NICU to bring the nurses a little gift, but I've totally rethought that plan. ?I'm not panicked about this flu, but I'm using common sense to keep my family safe. ?I mean, IF there was anyone in my immediate area with it, where would they go? ?The hospital, right? ?So I am staying away from the hospital for now. ?Overprotective or not, I'm just not chancing it.

  • I don't think you are being dumb.  I wouldn't risk it either.

  • I told DH we're avoiding hospitals and the doctors offices unless absolutely necessary because the last time we were in the ER with J for RSV we were exposed to the stomach flu which got him admitted three days later because he was so sick from it.
  • I was just about to post a swine flu question!  I think you are smart to avoid hospitals.  I am paranoid about it.  DH is  a teacher at an inner city high school, and I am freaked out about him getting it and passing it on to the babies.  I am so sick of being indoors, but I can't face another illness after Jack's RSV-- I hope this whole thing is resolved soon!

  • When I first read your post, I thought "yah, she's being a bit too overprotective, but that's her prerogative as a preemie momma."

But then I started reading the news and saw that there's a confirmed death in the US of a 23 month old from swine flu.  I don't think you're being too cautious any more. We won't be going anywhere that isn't absolutely necessary for awhile. This is scary!

Since I replied to your post a little while ago, I heard on the news that there may be a possible Swine Flu case in my county! ?They just said "Details at noon...." and then showed a highway sign with my town's name on it! ?WTH?

  • you are so not overreacting. ?While it's a small chance of actually contracting the flu, it's not a chance worth taking. ?
  • i wouldn't bring my son to a hospital if he didn't really need to go regardless of any outbreak. they are just full of sick people and germs. i have brought him to our NICU only bc the woman's center is separate from the regular hospital. if i didn't have to walk through the main hospital to get there id go. but then again my son is two, if i were you i'd just fax the paperwork.
