breastfeeders who've had the stomach flu...

how bad did your supply tank??  I'm getting over a stomach bug and my milk supply is pretty much gone.  Were you able to bounce back or was that the nail in the coffin?

  • I did not bounce back, my supply tanked and never was the same - eventually I stopped bfing because of it. You may need to start pumping to get the supply back.

  • Mine bounced back in a day or two. Eat and drink like crazy when you feel up to it and throw in some extra pumping sessions. Good luck!

  • I didn't notice a dip to begin with- my DH stayed home from work and took care of DD, but brought her to me so she could nurse at her regular nursing times... and everything seemed to work out fine. I hope that you can bounce back, if that is what you want to do!
  • mine came back ok (it was before thanksgiving).  i nursed through it almost the entire time, only missed 2 pumping sessions (the first day, i just couldn't do it).  then it tanked again around 8 months, and I had to give up and supplement.  We are still at one bottle of formula a day during the week (at daycare), but that's going to 2 next week.  my freezer stash is gone.

Thanks hun.  Feeling better now...still a little weak but as long as I'm not throwing up, I'm not complaining!!   Bad thing was, Kenley and I were sick with this at the same time...only she had the diarrhea.  It hasn't been a fun week in the Southern household.

  • Awwww Southern--I'm sorry.

I had it when he was about 4 mos or so--and it was BAD.  Basically I pumped every two hours or so--and drank anything that would stay down---gatorade, sprite, water, etc.  Eat IF you can.  Basically the fluid will help the most.  It bounced back after a few days--but be diligent on the pumping if you can (or BFif you feel up to it).

  • I bounced back fine.

I continued to nurse him the entire time I was sick.  I tried very hard to replace all of my lost fluids and tried to eat what I could.

Once I felt better I just ate as much as I could and drank as much as possible.  My supply was fine.

  • thanks girls!!!  I'm slowly able to eat and drink but I lost a good day and a half Sunday/Monday.  We're almost done nursing (1 yr) but I wasn't ready to be done quite yet.  Glad to know it's possible b/c they sure seem small and empty!!!

  • I had it one month post partum and that sucked! It felt like my milk all dried up, but it didn't. I drank TONS (like almost a gallon) of water every day for a few days. I also ate a lot of oatmeal and pumped/nursed constantly. ?I was able to keep my supply just fine, but that was all O focused on for several days.
  • I've had a couple stomach bugs and 2 sinus infections. ?My supply dipped every time and I was very fortunate that it bounced back. ?Just rest up, keep taking your vitamins and stay well hydrated (easier said than done.)
  • I got the stomach flu bad when he was three months old and it took about a week/week and a half for my supply to get back to normal.
