I posted this on the breastfeeding board but if anyone else knows anything about excessive lipase I need your help.
I've been giving DS thawed BM during the day so I can pump and build up my supply and freezer stash, and also get an idea of how much to pack for daycare.
Yesterday and today I thought his bottle smelled sour but thought maybe it was because I heated in a bottle warmer.
I tasted it and it is definately sour.
I tried thawing another bag from a different week just under water. That's also sour.
I tested 3 different dates thinking maybe its a fluke. They were all sour.
I compared it with freshly expressed milk and the fresh milk is fine.
I called my LC and we both found it odd that it doesn't smell soapy but it both smells and tastes sour. She said she thinks it's excessive lipase but has never heard of scalding it.
She said it should be fine as long as he is taking it. He drinks it all up without a fuss, but I'm second guessing whether its ok for him to have it.
If anyone can find the answer please let me know. We start daycare next week. I'm at a loss for words.
Re: XP: I'm in tears. 300 oz and its all sour.

I remember someone posting about it when I was still pg and feared it too. I thought "wouldn't that suck, I can't imagine."
I should have tested a bag at the beginning.
I called someone from LLL and she said she's "not sure" if it's ok. She hasn't heard of scalding either and she doesn't have experience freezing a whole lot of milk. Uh...can you FIND the answer for me?! She's goign to call me back.
good luck with the BM.
From kellymom:
A few mothers find that their refrigerated or frozen milk begins to smell or taste soapy, sour, or even rancid soon after it's stored, even though all storage guidelines have been followed closely. Per Lawrence & Lawrence (p. 781), the speculation is that these mothers have an excess of the enzyme lipase in their milk, which begins to break down the milk fat soon after the milk is expressed. Most babies do not mind a mild change in taste, and the milk is not harmful, but the stronger the taste the more likely that baby will reject it.
