Putting the car seat on the left side of the car....

Remind me why this is the most unsafe? It is defiantly the most convienent and has latch hooks. TIA

Re: Putting the car seat on the left side of the car....

  • The middle is definitely safest for obvious reasons.  I'm no carseat expert, but if you think about it, the left side of the car is the one most exposed to oncoming traffic when you are driving, so I would guess maybe most accidents impact the left side over the right.

  • A while ago, I read somewhere that more accidents happen on the driver's side- which is where your LO would be. I tried to find the info again but couldn't.
  • I agree that I don't want to be taking DS out of the car into the street, however MH has the car seat on that side. Plus my seats fold down ina 70/30 split and behind me is the bigger section. That is the reason DS seat is behind MH because our folds are opposite and he has his seats down 95% of the time for work. He needs the space. We hardly ever take his car though,

  • I've also heard about more accidents happening on the drivers side but sometimes you dont have a choice in the matter.

I had DD's infant seat on the driver's side the whole time we used it because DH couldn't ride in the car with it on the passenger side or in the center. Now that I have her convertible seat in the car, he couldn't drive my car at all with it on the drivers side unless he moved it (and it's a p.i.t.a. to move it w/the tether). I put it on the passenger side but now he'll have to drive the car every time we take it.

  • My oldest is behind the driver's side.  When you have 3 across the back, options are pretty limited.
  • When we had the carseat in my car inspected, the guy moved it from the middle to the drivers side - if your back seats fold down, the carseat can get caught up in the seam in the event of a crash so you want it on the far side of the larger section.  At least that's what he told us - he worked for the hospital and was retired highway patrol.

I think you have to look at the situation in each car to determine the best place, you can't have a hard and fast rule - MH's back seats are opposite so in his car the seat is on the passenger side.

  • Statistically, more side impact crashes happen on the driver's side. If you cannot install in the middle then it is best to put the youngest on the passenger side.  We couldn't get a seat in the middle next to my DSS's so we have DSS (5) behind the driver and DS behind the passenger. DSS's skeleton is much more devleoped and is better able to sustain the forces of a crash than an infant.
  • cuz you'd be opening the door into traffic (if you were parked on the street)--I hadn't thought of that put the police officer who installed ours says that's the reason
