NBR: How much food do you throw away?

I just got done purging the fridge of the gross stuff and I feel so depressed. I work hard to be frugal, but I still feel like I throw away a lot of stuff. Leftovers, bad fruits and veggies, etc. Some weeks we eat two things of celery, this week we ate a little over one, so much of it is trashed. Then I threw away half a cantaloupe and an almost full bag of lettuce. My carrots are looking squirrely, but I'm holding on to them for now. I compost, but it's still wasteful. So depressing!

Re: NBR: How much food do you throw away?

  • I absolutely hate throwing food away, it kills me, partly because the money aspect and partly just because I hate wasting something like that. I genuinely try to just eat it all (even if I have to come up with some weird combinations! :) and I think that's one reason why I could still stand to lose a few pounds, but I would rather eat something than let it go to waste! :)

At least there are a few options, like using old bananas for banana bread, and some veggies are still good to cook with before they're totally gone! :)

  • I throw out an embarassing amount- especially now that I'm pregnant again. Stuff goes bad and we rarely eat leftovers.
  • A ton.  I overbuy all the time and keeping thinking I'll eat leftovers but I never do.
  • I try to plan out as much of our weekly meal as possible so we don;t buy that much extra. MH hates it when we throw away food so when we have left overs I don't cook and for the most part there is only enough for one meal so leftovers come with me to work for lunch. Luckly we don't throw away that much food.

  • We compost, so nothing truly goes to waste.  It makes me feel so much better about leftover food in the fridge!
  • I throw away a ton of food because I never get to eat.  I fed them, changed them, and we all sat in the living room.  I put my swollen ankles up and they were playing nice, totally ignoring me.  I decided to eat something.  I made some eggs.  Sat down.

They attacked me.  My little one tugging at my leg.  The older one on the couch pawing at me saying, "Some!  Share!  Mama, share!  Bite?  I have bite?"  That was that.  I threw it out.

I wasn't going to stuff her with a 2nd breakfast and I clearly wasn't going to get to eat it.

Then there are the times I make things to eat and all hell breaks loose and it's gone bad on the counter by the time I get to it.

I toss a lot of food.  Sad

  • i used to throw out a lot more but now i try to plan my meals according to what i have so for example i will use the same ingredients in a couple meals that way i don't over buy and not as much goes to waste.?

  • I clean out the fridge every time I grocery shop, and it depresses me to say we never eat all the lettuce, tomato, cucumber and grapes that I buy so I end up trashing half of it.  Then if I have to buy parsley or cilantro to make something, most of that gets thrown out too b/c it goes bad before I can use it again.  We eat most everything else.  I think part of the problem is that I got into the habit of shopping only once every 2wks when I was pregnant, and fresh fruit and veggies is only really tasty for about 3-5 days.  I just need go to the store more often and buy fewer fresh things each trip.
