Trying to Get Pregnant

Doctor doesn't do pregnacy tests?

I tested positive this morning on a HPT!!!!  I called my doctor to schedule a blood test to confirm and they said they don't do blood/urine tests and just to go by the HPT.  They said insurance companies won't pay for it!  I had never heard this before - anyone experience the same thing?

Re: Doctor doesn't do pregnacy tests?

  • my doc's office didn't do a blood or urine test either. not for insurance reasons though. they just said that HPT's are just as accurate as any test they would do. i wouldn't worry. i'm 7months pregnant now and survived w/o one.

  • dont have an answer for you, but wanted to say good luck and congrats!
  • I had the same thing happen to me...they drew a bunch of blood and urine and didn't run a pregnancy test. I had spotting the next day so I called again and requested that they do a blood test...they did it then.
  • Do another digital test for confirmation, if you want real confirmation buy yourself a rabbit, that's the way they used to do it in the olden days ...LOL

  • Congrats!  And I agree with your doctor, just go by the HPT.  Those rarely give false positives.

  • Some doctors only do them if there is reason to believe there might be a problem. Like if you're possibly losing it or if you've been on special medicines while trying.

Mine wasn't going to do one and only did it because I asked. I know lots of people that have never had any bloodwork until their big initial work up at the OBs. GL!

  • Mine doesnt do them either. You have to request a blood/ urine test if you want it. They trust the HPT.

  • Mine doesn't do them either, unless you specially request.  My insurance will cover the cost if I specially request.
  • My gyno does... never had to pay xtra so i assume insurance does too..

  • On the flip side, my doctor's office requires you to go in JUST for the blood test before scheduling anything else, and it has to be at least a week after your missed AF.  They're quick to schedule the U/S and everything after that, though, and on the way to work, so I'm not really worried.  Sister had to travel 25 minutes for our OB just to take the test, though, and I think THAT would have upset me.
  • After I got my BFP I called to make an appointment with my OB and asked if I should/could come in for confirmation.  They said that they go by a positive HPT.  When I went in for my first appointment, they did run a urine pregnancy test that came up positive.
  • most will only do a blood test if there is a problem or previous problems with pregnancy. Congrats
  • Sorry about the doctor, but Congrats!!!
  • Most doctors won't do it since home tests are so accurate.  I only am getting blood tests b/c of my history.  Congrats!

  • This seems to be fairly common. My doctor's office didn't require a blood test after my BFP - they said if I took a HPT and it was positive, then I was pregnant and just scheduled me for my first OB appointment at 7-1/2 weeks. And this was despite the fact that I'd had an early miscarriage the previous cycle. Even when I went in unexpectedly a few days before my scheduled appointment due to cramping and lower back pain, they still didn't do bloodwork. They just did an ultrasound and confirmed that everything looked good - doctor said that there was no need to check my betas. I won't have labs done until my first official OB appointment this Monday.
  • At my first appointment around 6 weeks they did a bunch of urine and blood tests for all different things standard for pregnancy.  In addition to this they tested the level of HCG and also level of progestorone at my request.

  • Mine did not either. They just went by the HPT. Take a digital, it will make you feel better.

  • My doctor wouldn't see me until I was 8 weeks.  Even then, she didn't take blood until my appointment yesterday at 13 weeks.  My doctor doesn't do beta testing.
