Lunch suggestions?

I feel like we are falling into a bit of a rut with his lunches.  Mainly I guess because lunch is not a meal where he can just have some of what I'm having (salad/tv dinner etc).  We'll usually start with some fresh fruit and/or veggie, then some sort of "main" and end with a yogurt cup.

For his main, it usually ends up being a variation of toast, cheese toast, or hummus on pita.  What else can I put on bread for him?  Sometimes we add beans or meat on the toast if we have it available.  I want to try sms's idea of bean and cheese quesadillas, just need to get some.

What else do you give your toddler for lunch?  I don't want to get stuck in a rut with cheese toast just because it's easy and he loves it! :)

  • henry usually shares my lunch, which is usually leftovers from dinner. if i'm bad and get fast food though, i usually fix him a bean&cheese quesadilla or grilled cheese/cheese toast.

have you tried tortellini or ravioli? henry loves butternut squash ravioli. what about mac&cheese?

  • Eli gets lunch at school, and they have all kinds of things, but when he's at home I have the same problems.  He loves ham, so alot of days he gets sliced ham from the deli.  We also do alot of ravioli.  Cheese toast is another thing, but it sounds like you've got that covered!  So usually it's ham, a veggie, and a fruit cup.

  • For a quick fix I go with the gerber graduates cups, usually ravioli or spaghetti rings.  Sometimes mac n cheese.  Its also really quick and easy to make some spaghetti noodles and just add some pasta sauce.  Connor loves deli turkey so he'll eat that pretty well too.  Along with tomatoes, sliced black olives, corn, peas and green beans.  I've also been known to just make him a bowl of cereal or oatmeal on occasion.  I guess I'm trying to say that there's really no rhyme or reason to lunch, I just go with the flow and try different things at different times.  Good Luck!!  I know it can be tough.

  • Natalie usually has left overs from our meals the night before (same with dinner).  We want to make sure she gets used to eating a variety of types of food so that we don't end up having to make her separate meals of mac n cheese when she's older and eating dinner with us.  So she's had, to name a few, chili, bean cassoulle (spelling?), brunswick stew, pork stew, curray chicken, etc.  The only things we eat for dinner that she doesn't get are those that are mostly tomato based (lasagna, etc.).

If we don't have a left over for her, she'll have grilled cheese, tortillini, beans and rice.

  • I pack Ashley's lunch to take to the nanny's and we have sort of fallen in a rut too. She alternates between grilled cheese with tomato, toasted turkey and cheese, peanut butter and jelly and mac and cheese with peas. She always has some type of fruit with lunch too (normally strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, pears, apples or applesauce).
  • Lunch is hard for me to fix myself! I really hate lunch time!!! DD usually eats leftovers. You could try fixing him a peanut butter like sandwich with soynut butter or sunbutter... both are totally peanut free. Plus they aren't as thick as peanut butter which is really more of a choking hazard if you have no reason to suspect food allergies. Be warned they are both $$$!! I sometimes make dd a cream cheese and jelly sandwich... those are always a big hit. She does a lot of cheese and crackers. We are officially off deli meat at our house... I found out at a peanut allergy class that there is some meat with pistachios in it... and I am sure they don't clean the meat slicer after cutting that!!
